    Lucky Day

I've just been given six 5 frame National Nucs and although they do not have any tin sheet roofs and a few little bits are missing they are originally from P**nes and are unused. How good was that! :serenade: Would be interested to hear your thoughts on if they are big enough to put out as...

    MAQs treatment. 7 day report

I posted a couple of threads regarding the ongoing MAQs treatment that finished yesterday on my hives that are housed in an out building. In the first hive the Queen (last years) was nowhere to be seen and I found two fully formed supercedure cells!!! This was the strongest colony treated and...

MAQs after 24 hours UPDATE after 48 hours

Thanks everyone for the comments, PM's after my last post. As an update, both hives have calmed now and the carnage has stopped. There were not many additional bodies this morning and by the afternoon all had been cleared. I counted the varroa drop this afternoon on both hives. The first hive...

    MAQs after 24 hours

Well I have read on this forum that MAQs goes of with a bang but was not really prepared for the devastation that I saw this morning. My hives are in an old pig sty so very well sheltered and on gravel as opposed to grass. There were loads more bodies than I was expecting (partly to do with...

iPhone / iPad apps for beekeeping

Can anyone recommend any apps that they use for any aspect of beekiness. I have just looked at some such as the one by the barefoot beekeeper but not completely sold on it! Free ones are more appealing although the chargeable ones seem to be only 99p.

    12 oz or 1lb

I am about to order my first set of labels for my honey. (Trying to be organised as it is yet to be extracted!) Money is tight (cant order both sets of labels) so I was interested in your experience of which size sells best? Is there a perceived customer preference for size? We know size does...

    Inflation

I have just seen an e bay add for complete hive INCLUDING 2012 laying Queen for £500 as a starting price! 141002405249 So two things; Do bees count as livestock for e bay rules AND although I accept getting colonies through winter etc was hard and prolonged, are they really worth that much...

    Red pollen?

So the bees are on the rape (yellow pollen) Hawthorne (white pollen) and I saw :thanks::thanks:both these going in this morning. My question is what are the candidates for the red/burgundy coloured pollen that has just started going in?

    Mould in roof!

I wonder if someone can either put my mind at rest or recommend I do something immediately. My new cedar hive with a second hand Ashforth feeder full of 2:1 sugar syrup was installed with a package of bees on 10th May. I have had a quick peek about 6 days ago but went for a full inspection...

    Hive in a building?

Hi I am thinking of utilising an old outbuilding which is draft proof and watertight to house my hive. It has a high opening in a side wall which I propose will be the bees entrance/exit to the building, encouraging the bees to exit the hive and fly high. Are there any reasons that you...

    Hive treatments

I was wondering what recommendations I would get on the subject of external hive treatments? My new hive arrived a few days ago and as I have plenty of time until I can get my first nuc of bees I can spend time on it. So, should I paint it, leave it as is (cedar) or oil it? Thanks

    Newbee in Kent

Well I have finally taken the plunge, joined a beekeeping class and ordered my first hive! I have no other equipment yet but an excitement developing at a great rate! If and when anyone local to Tonbridge, Paddock Wood etc starts to inspect their hives (big frost in Kent this morning) and can...
