    The Weather & Floods

Me too, my front door's about 25 yards from the River Hull but we've not been flooded yet. Those in power seem to have a fixation on building flood defences that seem to push the problem into other areas, maybe they should go back to the tried and trusted method of dredging the rivers instead...

Fondant - above or below crownboard?

On the first inspection of the year (23rd April and coinciding with a visit from the RBI) there was roughly around a third of the fondant left on each hive, as mentioned earlier, I've 'slotted' the crown boards to give access to the fondant right across the centre of the hive, you could clearly...

Fondant - above or below crownboard?

Yes, A full 12.5 kg box on each hive, it worked well for me last year and both hives came through the winter OK. the bees can take what they want when they need it and whats left over in the spring gets disolved into 1:1 syrup. Regards CD

Fondant - above or below crownboard?

Hi All, I bought a few crownboards and extended the centre slot to almost side to side, put this on top of the brood box cut a similar size strip of plastic from the slab of fondant and put the full 12.5kg slab right over the slot. My idea with this is that it reduces the chances of isolation...

Waste Food Products .... Anaerobic Digester

We have an anaerobic digester, it disposes of all waste food, produces copious ammounts of methane gas and reduces the waste to small easilly removed lumps, we call it a Labrador :sorry:

    MAQs treatment. 7 day report

I applied MAQS to two of my hives on Saturday 7th, both 14x12 with super and open OMF, slightly overcast with an air temp of around 50f, the strips were put on top of the brood frames under the QX as per instructions, results, nothing that I could see ! the bees just kept on doing what they do...

Hi All, Visited my local supplier today and bought MAQS for my hives, I asked if you still need to use oxalic acid as you would do with Apiguard, he didn't know, so has anyone any idea wether you still need to treat with oxalic or not ? Regards CD

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Moved a nuc into a 14 x 12 BB this morning, spent the afternoon extracting 20 frames from the other two hives, even 'she who cast no shadow' got involved, we've ended up with 34lbs of the amber nectar, not bad for a first attempt :hurray: Regards CD

    Councils ... I despair !

Hi All, Same sort of thing in my neck of the woods, our riverbank's usually covered in dandelions, butterburrs and marsh marigolds, followed by buttercups and clover, then along comes the local council who chop it all down, they seem to do this at least three times a year just when everythings...

    Post your 2013 swarm photos

Went out today to inspect the hives just as a swarm took off, watched it circling and flying around for about 10 minutes before it settled in one of my nextdoor neighbours apple trees about 12 feet up. An hour later after a bit of ladder ballancing and sawing the branch off, there they are...

    Strange day !

In reply to a couple of posts, The concrete blocks look like concrete but seem to be made of something much lighter, they weigh less than a house brick, we had a lot kicking about and that seemed to be a good use for them. The bees 'doing their thing' No, the queen hasn't been clipped, so...

    Strange day !

Hi All, Around 10.30 this morning my beekeeping neighbour and mentor came to get me shouting SWARM ! SWARM ! I popped next door, all of 10 yards to see the air alive with bees, I went home, grabbed my suit, nuc, etc and went back to see where they were going, we watched the bees exploring...

    Local BKA auction today !

Personally, I can't speak for the BKA but the auction listing just gave the number of hives, colonies and nucs, each item had it's own listing taped to the top giving full details of the contents, bees, bias, stores, inspection date etc. I believe from the description that hive refers to a...
