    Wax Moth 1:Bin liners 0

Hi there. If you stand the bottom super on a board (ply or whatever you have that is even) in the garden so that there is practically no gap, then stack the other supers on top and place some kind of lid on the stack you should be fine. The top super should have no frames in it to have room...

    Wax Moth 1:Bin liners 0

Hi there. I use sulphur strips - and after that tower the supers with top and bottom ventilation (mesh). You then have a chimney effect that the moth does not like even if one did manage to get in. Greets Phil

    very nasty trouble

Hi there. I would wait and see. If it was due to OSR it should be over soon. If it was due to genetics you will need to give the colony a little more time for the old workers to die and new bees from the new queen to hatch and take over. Greets Phil

Epipens, their use and possible dangers

Hi there. I was tested and diagnosed allergic by my allergy clinic after inconsistant systemic reactions. I could be stung 4 times without a reaction, then again once with a reaction. The reaction has never been life threatening so far. I was issued an epipen, anti-histamine and cortisone...

Hive and drum kit in garden!

Hi there. Don't think it should be a problem for the 2 nuclei (pl.). The drums are in the shed..i would think he will also play there? As long as the hives are not really close or standing up against the shed.... Greets Phil

    Advice needed re:long holiday

Hi there. I suppose the most important question is - does the person that is going to take care of them whilst you are away know what he is doing? If he/she is a bee keeper, i would see no problem at all. If he/she knows nothing about bees what would you expect him/her to do if a problem...

Parasitic fly linked to bee losses

Hi there. Here is the Link to the scientific paper: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0029639 Especially those buying bees from N-America may be interested in: "Furthermore, the domestic honey bee is potentially A. borealis' ticket to global invasion...

Bees have all gone - photos

Hi there. Had two of those this year - Varroa pressure too high. As a few have already posted - typical picture. It is a shame, but it happens. As long as there is no faeces on the stores you can use them to help other colonies maybe in spring. All the other comb I would melt down. Greets...

    Buckfast Bees

Hi there. @Chris And that is where you are wrong. Since the ice age the bees have moved from the (now) Mediterranean and spread out all over Europe ...which took a very long time. During this process the bee races evolved and dominated the areas best suited for them. That is why today a...

    Buckfast Bees

Hi there. These are the figures from 2004....in 7 years hybrid genes can contaminate a large area especially if the protection zones are not clustered but spread out. The 7% A.m.m. are the local bee in the more mountainous areas like Tyrol, Salzburg and parts of Carinthia. It is natural that...

    Buckfast Bees

Hi there. :iagree: 100% with "the naked beekeeper". The best bee for your area is the local bee...that is why it evolved there...in simple words - that's why nature put it there. The Buckfast Bee is a hybrid of bees from all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a registered trademark and...

Queen excluder on or off for winter?

Hi there. I go with the rest here...never leave QE on over winter. The cluster will move around the stores and your queen will be left behind at the QE and most certainly die. Greets Phil p.s. good luck with the hedge.

First catch your bees- bait hives anyone?

Hi Victor Meldrew. Use of antibiotics to eradicate disease in bees is forbidden in the EU (that includes Austria)...EU law 37/2010, Austrian law TAKG/2002. The method is: Brush-swarm in new swarm box and place in cool dark place for 3 days - then feed with syrup. In the meantime disinfect all...

    Tamper-proof seals?

:iagree: I am always stunned by the amount of plastic wrapping in UK food stores. On the other hand...by the time it hits the shelf in the UK every item would have probably been touched numerous times by "who knows" and they don't have to worry about mishandling the goods. If it's sealed it can...

First catch your bees- bait hives anyone?

Hi there. I find it a little strange that beekeepers the NBU and the BA are so into trying to fight disease and yet beekeepers themselves set bait hives with old comb. It seems contra productive. If you set up a bait hive with old comb and you have latent AFB or EFB you will without doubt...

    Oxalic Acid

Hi there. As mentioned in another tread I use an oxalic acid evaporator. However I have an "external" model that has a tube that you place in to the front of the hive - and an air pump (some have electric ventilators - I prefer to KISS). I close the OMF with the spec. board and the flight...

So what's the problem with Oxalic Acid then?

Hi there. I use oxalic vapour in late autumn - early winter. I do not trickle any acids but use Thymol twice and then oxalic to get rid of the rest of the mites when broodless. Looking at the weather in my area I will use oxalic vapour in about 2-3 weeks time. Greets Phil

Is possible to be cruel to Honey Bees

Hi there. Interesting turn this topic has taken. But however interesting the religious side of things may be from a philosophical point of view...from a practical point of view it makes no difference at all. As an agnostic - borderline atheist - I get a bit grumpy when religion is used as an...
