When to do Autumn feed a newish nuc

Thanks for this advice Swarm. This is the clearest explanation, and by far the safest I reckon.

When to do Autumn feed a newish nuc

I'm just utterly confused. Damned if you do feed now, and damned if you don't. As we are told to disturb the bees as little as possible, i.e. Weekly at most to assess their needs. How on earth are we as beginners to know what the correct advice is. The weather has been freezing almost here for...

When to do Autumn feed a newish nuc

I have been advised to feed my late nuc double strength feed now. After reading the above posts I'm confused. I was also told to feed them while they are taking it. Yesterday, they took 2 litres in 24 hours. Just how often should we be feeding?

    White spot on bee faces

Kaz, If you overreacted, then I did as well. I would love to really get verbal about this particular point, but I don't want to get banned. I lurked here for long enough before actually posting anything. I also think you are a breath of fresh air. Its not acceptable to decry, or belittle anyone...

    White spot on bee faces

I have to say Kaz, in your defence, I felt the same as you did, so don't blame yourself for being moody when you weren't. You reacted exactly as I would. There are one or two people on this forum who are so inflated with their own importance. We can all boast qualifications in one thing or...

    Hives Stolen

Well it just has to be another beek doing this. How utterly despicable. This is like stealing another man's/woman's work tools. It used to be punishable by death. Hopefully this low life will be caught, then we must publish the persons face everywhere,:cuss::rant::rant: just like they do with...

What books are you reading poll

I've read a couple of books from the library on beekeeping over the past few years, but I can't remember what, or who they were by. I am just venturing out with bees after many a long years wait for suitable circumstances. Currently studying Bees at the bottom of the garden, Alan Campion. Great...

Nucs for sale Staffordshire / Derbyshire

    Nuc wanted in West Yorkshire

I would like to get hold of a nuc this year if possible. Its taken years to be able to find the land I now have for my hive. Another year and a year to expand is a bit deflating.:)

    An absolute disaster day, month....

The good thing about severe incidents like this is the opportunity it gives the rest of us to reflect, on just how fragile, and vulnerable we all are. And how we must always be vigilant in the simplest of things we do to keep each other safe. Rab.... I am new here, but have read many, many...

    Hello from West Yorkshire

I agree Kaz, Only my first find was the natural bee keepers forum, promoting top bar hives. Whilst I do think the bees would like this method of keeping. I don't think it would be easy for a new comer like myself to start with. This forum seems to have the answers to every possible question...

    Hello from West Yorkshire

 Yes of course I heard of these nasties. Just not familiar with the acronyms. I think that's a lesson well learned, and all for the asking. I didn't however realise that it was so bad in my area. Thanks Kaz, and Kath. This forum is wonderful.:)

    Hello from West Yorkshire

Just as a P.S. to the above post. What do the acronyms stand for exactly. EFB and AFB ? This must be beek speak, as I haven't come across either of these during the extensive reading on the subject. Still crossing my fingers in the hopes of someone mailing me with a nuc for sale.

    Hello from West Yorkshire

That's correct. I could give you 101 reasons but lets stick to one. I can't make it to anywhere unaided. Is that a satisfactory answer? Now I did ask in my original post for advice. I got that. My last post was asking for any help in acquiring a nuc locally if possible as I don't want to have...

    Hello from West Yorkshire

Thanks for the advice. I do intend to have at least two hives. I have the one national, and two supers all ready and waiting for now. I did chase after the colonies that were available in Scarborough to be able to make a start this year. Unfortunately, I was too late. The gentleman did say he...

    Bee "Taxidermy"

I am a semi retired professional Taxidermist. The best way to deal with mounting a bee, assuming you don't want to cast it into what used to be called "plasticraft" Which was a clear plastic resin epoxy. Is to first freeze it in the deep freeze of any fridge. After 48 hours this will send it...

    Hello from West Yorkshire

Thanks so much for that OtleyBee. I visit Otley quite a lot and have friends there. I would prefer to do a course but its impossible for me to attend any locally. I have studied the subject in great depth now, but have no hands on experience. I do have a national hive ready and waiting for a...

    Hello from West Yorkshire

Thanks for the welcome folks. :) I would still like someone to advise me on this part of my original post bee-smillieI would like to know of it would be advantageous to obtain a nuc of bees this year, or order some for next spring? Or would it even be possible to lure a swarm to my new hive?

    Hello from West Yorkshire

Hi All. I've been lurking around here for a few weeks on and off, and so thought I should say hello:) I have recently purchased a national cedar hive with the necessary equipment, after acquiring a large allotment on which to keep bees, right on my doorstep almost. I am also in the happy...
