    Grafting larvae

Hi Yes the young larvae need to go in the same way up. If you are grafting into plastic cups its recommend to get the cups/frame into the hive before grafting for a short period. It gives the bees a chance to get a bit of wax on them/acclimatise. Ian

    Buyer beware

"I bought and collected a number of Queens this week from a well known UK reputable supplier. Upon introduction a couple of hours later, I found that 2 Queens were dead. I telephoned that supplier to be informed 'not our responsibility, there were alive when they left here'." Buyer Beware! By...

Special Offer on Tacwise Hobby Nail Gun..

Hi I think you may find the 191el pro the better model and think they are about £50. I have used these for years and thousands of frames, i would also suggest buying from your local B&Q and keeping the receipt. Then when you burn it out a quick exchange is possible. Just checked out the site...

Want to be an SBI? Apply now!

Hi Having spoken to 1 or 2 in the past i think the jobs may have to be advertised as its a seasonal role and up for grabs. Even if there is an inspector from last season they have to go through the process......... Ian

Thinking about moving hives down the hill

Hi Bring them down for the Spring and Summer and back up for the Heather in Autunm. I would also seriously think about Wintering them in the Valley, I was on Dartmoor the other day and its like another f&^$(&% planet. Cold does not begin to describe the wind:eek: Ian

A spoon full of Nescafe in the feed?

Hi I AM ASTOUNDED THAT IT'S NICOTINE BASED PESTICIDES ONE DAY AND NOW BAYER ARE INTRODUCING CAFFEINE BASED PRODUCTS UNDER THE GUISE OF THIS REPORT.................................:hairpull::hairpull: Clearly this is a long term plan to promote a new line of latte based insect killing...

    Bee improvement????

Hi How will you insure they want to swarm on a regular basis. If you intend just to keep them in a crowded box this can work, but you will get the bees to a point of such frustration they can/will swarm well before the quoted cap cell stage. Learn to graft and produce the cells when u want. Ian

    Heated Uncapping Tray Questions

Hi Are you asking because you are thinking of buying one. I picked up a second hand Thornes model in a load of gear and it was no way up to the job. To hot directly under the element and to cold at the edges. Some pro model capping/comb melters cost £1000s, you get what you pay for. Ian

    Mashed comb honey

Hi VM yes you are right about chunk honey crystalising, but if you bottle as needed and store in a warm enviroment i find my general floral/summer honey works fine. Ian

    Mashed comb honey

Hi Seen this done a lot with cappings from the uncapping tray, may sound a bit better than mash or extractor tank scrapings.........As to what percentage, enough to make it spreadable, its judge by eye. Have also had hayfever sufferers asking for cappings as the thought is it will contain more...

    Tbh nuc!

Hi Does whoever asked u for a TBH nuc already have the hive, if so you could take the hive and do a shook swarm and hand back when established. At the very least you could take the correct frames and establish on those. Even if the angle of your hive walls differs a bit of trimming will see...

    Varroa Treatment

Hi Pargyle Think Oliver new what was intended but was just being pedantic.... An easy way to dust or roll a swarm is simply to apply the sugar directly before hiving. If you have collected your swarm in a solid travel type box it makes things easy. Before hiving a swarm most of us would give...

    Varroa Treatment

Hi Oliver Don't think i miss read anything, the question was asked with regard to a swarm so dusting or rolling amounts to the same thing and MM suggested that. As to the method of treatment i would go with oxalic myself if they needed it, but pargyle wanted something a little more organic!!! Ian

    Varroa Treatment

Hi Muswells suggestion of a sugar dusting may be best for you, waitng till they are established misses a easy broodless treatment period when treatments like oxalic and dusting are effective. You do have to be realistic though in what bees do and don't like, they probably don't like us taking...

    Varroa Treatment

Hi You mentioned chemical treatments in your first post, so i thought you were just trying to avoid those, hence the question. The fact the bees dont like it is part the reason some of these thymol based treatments work. They incourage good house keeping and grooming. It should also be said that...
