    Protecting my crocus bulbs

If possible you could cover the area you planted with chicken wire, its cheap and they wont be able to get through it. The bulbs will grow through the wire, hiding it. ;) Good luck!

The coming winter - a worry

Reading through the posts on this thread, Im not sure whether to be impressed by the inherent optimism, or despairing! What happened in the Gulf of Mexico was an absolute disaster, the true effects of which we will not know for years.... regardless of the percentage of oil and corexit (which is...

    Neopoll Vs Syrup

MJbee, sorry to be thick, but how do you tell the weight of your hives?

    Neopoll Vs Syrup

Thanks MM, that makes sense. I just thought it may be better for them than syrup. Funnily enough when I looked on the modern beekeeping website, they had sold out of Neopoll, but I guess beeks order it now to use later. (as you suggested above)

    ethics

Unless the frames have the name of the rightful owner on them I wouldnt even bother to ring the police as the beek may say he marks his frames in the same way, which would make getting them back very difficult. TBH I'd pinch them back asap, maybe taking extra frames for good measure, to teach...

    Neopoll Vs Syrup

As I only have 3 colonies I think I may spoil my bees and buy some Neopoll instead of making syrup, would this be better for the bees? (and justify the extra expense!) Plus how much (roughly) would each colony need to see them through winter until the nectar flows?

    What could have caused this?

Perhaps encourage him to join this site? He sounds very keen but ignorant, I'm sure he would learn lots here. :D Then everyone is happy?

    next year

I think most local associations have a beginners course which runs during the winter (its what I did). You get to ask loads of questions, meet local beeks and get advice on everything and anything. Then when the weather warms up in the spring you get to do the 'practical' side, where you deal...

    First sting

That's really interesting, my Mum has MS and my Dad has Parkinsons, so perhaps I should get them into beekeeping? ;)

    Smoking

Ive got loads of Rosemary in my garden, I guess you have to dry it out first? (we've got a rayburn, so could do that in the warming oven overnight?)

    Omlet courses

Not really sure if this is really relevant but our allotment association took delivery of 3 Omlet 'Eglu Cubes' yesterday (chicken houses) which we ordered as they were the only chicken houses we could find with a fox proof run. I was talking to the bloke while he put them up and one of my...

Anyone enter cookery classes at honey shows?

    That's brilliant, well done you! :) :) :)

neighbours liveing next door who are not happy

I think most people keep their bees in fairly close proximity to people, even if as someone said before, they are only by a footpath. How many people have access to a totally secluded spot away from anyone? Many posts in this thread could put people off keeping bees, because of the 'worse case...
