    Poorly bees- CBPV?

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll try getting hold of ChrisfNVS, see how he deals with it. I do have a small microscope which allegedly goes up to x 900- you just can't see anything at the higher magnifications, I was assuming it would need a better quality scope- if there's no-one that...

    Poorly bees- CBPV?

My bee shave always been healthy as long as I've kept on top of varroa. Last year I had 2 colonies dwindling and couldn't work out why. I got the inspector to check them and he didn't know, but confirmed that it wasn't foul brood. I combined the 2 (as they were in the same condition) then...

For the good for the hive...crappy deal for the drones

What's wrong with oxalic trickling? Dirt cheap and really easy to do. Doesn't affect sealed brood, but neither does vapourizing. I bought trickle 2 from Thornes, now I have the handy bottle I can buy by the litre from anyone. Some people will also use a single treatment of a thymol remedy...

Pollen supplement trial - R Oliver

Worth bearing i mind this is for bees in the 'green desert' of american agriculture, with no natural forage whatsoever.

    Straight labels

I only bother for showing, but that's what I do. Strip of thin cardboard the right width, staple it into a ring. Works every time.

    Feeding Fondant

I feed fondant in the same way as MikeT. No problem with disturbing the colony as the fondant is above the crownboard. Old tub off, new tub on, they don't even know I was there. You're right that they can use easily 2kg a month, but they don't tend to use it equally- usually very little up to...

    Something to heed

Someone used a nice description the other day- it should feel 'nailed down'.

    Bees Boxes & Heat

It was very well received at our assoc- raised a lot of discussion, and sold a lot of Kingspan for our local builders merchants!

    Black bee

:iagree: Are you treating for varroa? If not, you should be. .

Einstein's famous words about bees. is he wrong!

I believe it's an urban myth that he said that- I think it was actually said by a beekeeper with a similar name.

    Varroa tray

The board should only be in for thymol/MAQs treatment, and briefly 2/3 days) for mite counts.

    Queen Cell sticking straight out?

I'd be a bit concerned at superceding- I haven't seen any drones recently. Don't do anything hasty, leave them to make their own decisions.

Some good advice needed re treatment.

I would definitely treat. The temperatures are dropping a bit, so some insulation over the crownboard will help. Personally I'm using thymol, but either of the others should be fine. I also treat with Oxalic in the winter, as belt and braces, but leaving it until then can mean them going into...

    Can you explain this?

Best first course would have been to check hive 1 with a test frame to see if it was truly q-. If it was, and with hive 2 the size of a mating nuc, combining would have (and may still be) your best bet.

    P*ynes Feeder (National not Nuc)

I have a mk 1. Sorted it by pushing fine mesh under the walls to stop bees coming through, and making perspex lids: however I don't like large feeders as if they decide they don't want it (eg late flow) you're left witha tank of spoiled syrup. I can get to my hives often, so I use all 2L...

    Rust released to kill balsam

It's an impatiens, so presumably it could affect busy lizzies and New Guinea Hybrid inpatiens.

    Rust released to kill balsam

As for what will grow in its place hopefully the mix of native grasses and flowers that were there before it took over. .

Next ice age on the way.

You have to remember that in the US it is considered acceptable to teach that creation is true and evolution isn't. .

Next ice age on the way.

Yes, that's what you're paying for. Kwikfit (or whoever) pay a recycling company to deal with it, which is how they dispose of it.

Oh, for heaven's sake. There is nothing in that article that disagrees with global warming, read it again. Global warming is real and man-made, and continuing. The terminology got changed a little while back to climate change because it was open to mis-interpretation, eg ' bring it on, we...
