    Weird swarming or queen mating?

We are talking about 1000s of bees all at the same time and then 10 minutes later...nothing. I would like to think that but I don't think so. I've seen orientations before but this was more swarm-like.

    Weird swarming or queen mating?

The split went in the nuc with 2 queen cells that were about to pop. Sorry "walkaway" split is probably the wrong term to use. Artificial swarm might be a better one.

    Weird swarming or queen mating?

Hi all, This is my 4th year beekeeping but the first time I've seen something like this. Basically, I did a walkaway split on Sat 29th May. This split was with two sealed swarm queen cells which were just about to emerge. Two days later on Mon 31st May at 1500 I watched as the bees from this...

Why are Nationals so popular? (and other advice appreciated)

Hey guys, I've had quite a successful year this year and so I am planning a bit of expansion (up to 5 more hives) for next year. I have been doing a lot of research into the different hive types and which ones are best for me for the following year as I have only had two hive (one National, one...

    Splitting a hive

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll give it a few more weeks but just want to prepare in advance. I guess I won't have to move it miles then and can sort out the frames closer to the time!

    Splitting a hive

Obviously a more experienced beekeeper might be able to give a better idea on this but I assume the logic behind it is you've got to move them far away so the split doesn't just go back to the original hive as soon as they come out the front door.

    Splitting a hive

Hi guys, Although I've been beekeeping for over a year and a half now I'd still say I'm pretty new to it all and especially to this topic. My hive survived the winter and they are all going out now especially due to the nice weather we've been having. I had a look at them today and their...

Yes, another beginner asking for QC advice

I got the queen and the bees from a random swarm so it is hard to know any of her history however she did start laying as soon as the comb was drawn out which leads me to believe she is the previous colonies original queen rather than a swarm queen. This is just a guess though.

Yes, another beginner asking for QC advice

The queen cells were fully capped. A large clump of bees was on the hive stand leg, then half of them moved onto a nearby tree. 10 minutes later the clump on the tree disappeared and the remaining clump on the stand slowly went back into the hive. Yes, the original queen is still in the hive...

Yes, another beginner asking for QC advice

Hi guys, Seen a lot of these sort of posts so sorry for another one. Over the last week or so my bee population has increased a huge amount so much so that they are on the OMF and by the entrance even at night. I opened them up today to see the amount of stores they have has increased a large...

    Questions from a new beekeeper

@eltalia - Yes, thank you! @Madge - Yes, I've got a square one from Thorne but I will definitely go check that my one is on properly in the next couple of days! @Newbeeneil - Seems we have the same type of feeder so thanks a lot for that idea. If bees continue to die I will try out...

    Questions from a new beekeeper

Hi guys, I have a few questions that I could use answers or opinions. Some can only be peoples opinions and that fine but if you can back up your opinion that would be even better. Feel free to answer all or only some. 1) Should the the hole/holes in the crown board be covered up at all? 2) I...
