    Apidea - What next ?

Once you have a mated and laying queen in an Apidea, what are the options next ? Is is case of tipping all the bees into a nuc ? If so, what do you do with the three frames of eggs, larvae and brood ? Al

    Swarming season

I had the same experience twice on two consecutive days this week - swarm cloud appears and bee everywhere on the outside of the hive - then they settled down again

    Macdee’s Demaree

Macdee’s “Demarees” Well in one hive that was Demaree'ed it seems to be settling down, the other hive that was Demaree'ed has built some QCs with an egg in. So if I understand it correctly, the point is the hive is aware that the nurse bees & brood are still around, despite the fact that there...

    Macdee’s Demaree

One question though. In the Demeree we are separating the brood from the queen and flying bees, by putting all the brood up in the top box. So isn't this very similar to a pagden artificial swarm, where we again separate the queen and flying bees from the brood. "The principle of the [pagden]...

    Macdee’s Demaree

Hi I am a bit confused, because on this website http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/demaree.html it talks about 'If I found queen cells during a routine inspection I would....' & 'Works well as a swarm control method.' What am I missing here ? Al

    Macdee’s Demaree

Hi all, I did a Demaree on two hives last Sunday and did a check today of both. The first one had three charged QCs in the top brood box as expected. However the second hive had 3 charged QCs in the BOTTOM box.; this was not as expected. All three are in the middle of the brood frame that was...

    Queen cells...is it just me?

Hi I have just done a Demaree on two hives because I found queen cells and wanted to keep the colonies strong for the current flow and OSR that is now in flower. Will check in a week for QCs in the top brood box. Hope yours goes well too. Cheers Al

Upgrade to Brood & 1/2 - Now Full of Nectar

There was a super on top of the hive, as well as the one I added under the brood box. Today I checked that hive and found two small areas in the lower super, under the brood box, where there queen was starting to look around and where there was no nectar. I will keep an eye on things and let...

Upgrade to Brood & 1/2 - Now Full of Nectar

Morning all, I added a super to a single brood box a week ago, placing it at the bottom. The frames where already drawn and empty. The inspection yesterday revealed that they had filled it will nectar - 70%. I thought that the hive should have expanded the brood nest downwards into the 1/2...

Queen Cells in Spring - Argh

Hi Gunzo, Would you delay things until the end of April and then let any supercedure cells remain from that point on ? Al

    Double Brood Boxes

Hi B+ Yes that makes sense, but should that be a brood box + QE + super; or a QE + 2 supers ? That is where I am not sure about which type of box to use. Does that come down to how much honey is stored in the current brood box ? Al

Queen Cells in Spring - Argh

UPDATE: The two queen cells in the mini nuc didn't hatch. They did contain queen bee shaped larvae. I think they got too cold over night, due to the low temperatures and low number of bees in the mini nuc. The main hive was checked again yesterday and it had another single queen cell with an...

    Double Brood Boxes

Hi Yes 14x12 frames and there is already an empty super on them :> What I was interested in is what factors lead people to more to double brood with supers over single brood with more supers. Thoughts ?????

    Double Brood Boxes

Hi all, What are the influencing factors that would lead you to run a hive on double brood ? I currently have a very busy hive on a single deep brood box, with 6 frames of wall to wall brood; 4 out of the 6 frames are sealed Cheers Al

Queen Cells in Spring - Argh

Good afternoon all, I checked though the original hive today and found another queen cell primed with an egg in it. It was in the middle of a frame I removed it, like recommended by others on this thread. How long should I keep removing these single primed queen cells ? Cheers Alex

Queen Cells in Spring - Argh

The existing sealed cell had a big larvae in it, and the unsealed cell was sealed today by the bees. I put the second cell in a mini nuc and will see what happens; I always like experimenting and learning more. It was fun cutting up the frame into two halves and setting up some new mini frames...
