    Re-housing wild colony now

WingCommander, your plan sounds like the best option with what you have. I hope you find the queen!

    Heated honey going sour?

My guess would be that the honey was not cured enough and the heating sped up the yeasts and made it spoil faster.

    apologies for the source!

The article makes the husband look bad, but considering the source... Anyways, even if the husband removed his hives, she is still allergic to stings and bees are everywhere. Smart move to get the therapy instead of trying to ban any and all bees around her :D

Tell me more about the Buckfast bee

drstitson, I'll definitely add them to my reading list. I am currently reading Contemporary Queen Rearing.

    Emergency Queens

Jay Smith said that bees cannot tear the old combs down in order to build a proper queen cell. You can help them out by tearing out the bottom 2 ribs of the brood cells with your hive tool. This is the MDA Splitter on the spot queen rearing method. It works good if you only have a couple hives...

Tell me more about the Buckfast bee

I've read Beekeeping in Buckfast Abbey. The only drawback is that it was way too short :D I would like to hear more about your experiences with the Buckfast bee. I am interested in potentially starting a line for my apiary. I have located a Canadian breeder that is fairly close to me. So...

    Tricky Question

This question definitely gets the wheels turning! Apart from nosema, ineffective fall mite treatment can cause the hive to enter winter with inadequate cluster. I have seen clusters as small as 6-8 inches across. A sudden cold snap could cause such a small cluster to starve within less then an...

to insulate or not to insulate

No, it is not 'sponge rubber'. I have not seen any in 3" widths. The 1" is R10, which is pretty close to what they insulate houses around here (they use R13). I still need to add the candy boards to the nucs before I add the final touches to the wrapping.

to insulate or not to insulate

I just insulated my hives by adding one 1" pink foam sheet between the inner cover and the telescoping lid. I also strapped 4 pieces of foam around the box/boxes. Will not win me any home improvement awards, but my yards are not visible to the neighbors, anyways. You can see the pictures on my...

    Tricky Question

If it is really starvation, your comb will be full of dead bees with their heads in the cells. I am not sure what the "official" answer is, but usually, you can knock them off or brush them off. After that, you can give the combs to a strong hive to clean it up and then you can re-use it.

    Hi from USA

I've stumbled upon multiple references to this forum and when I finally checked it out, I found a wealth of information. I little bit about me: I've been keeping bees since 2009 and have been successfully maintaining a treatment free line since then. Currently, I have 19 colonies and 9 are in...
