    Making fondant

If grainy then look again at the dissolving stage for the sugar, make sure that you have no lumps left that can burn or seed later. Second, the early stages of gentle agitaion during cooling are also important. I knead mine to get a uniform paste, if you pour direct to a mould you'll also get a...

    Santa's list

.... an overdraft extension on the claimed payback period from honey sales for the christmas presents I have had in previous years? :ot:

    Any ideas-? Stores light....

If the colony is light then it is, why becomes accademic. Looking inside might tell you why but resolve the issue at this time of year. I would suggest a fondant block, routine external monitoring and it will be what it will be.

    Chemotherapy & Untreated Honey

Bluebell, I hope the following explanation helps. You should be absolutely fine including honey in your diet and good luck. R Edit add: just seen the other point you raised. In practical terms you cant easily heat kill C.bot spores. You'll ruin the honey before you achieve a spore kill...

    Uncapped honey - drop test

Shake test? Cost of average investment to keep bees and make some honey: > £300? To apply the same rigor and detail as to other aspects of the hobby - cost of refrac: < £20 Value of impressed friends and family + returning punters: £priceless Why guess when you can know?

What date are you treating for Varroa

As with Veg & Co I will likely be taking what HB crop I can, then extract and treat Using apiguard and if necessary support stores with some flattened fondant under the crown board (to keep them going if the ivy has not yet come in for the month). I'll then give them the autumn syrup feed but...

    Jaspers!

Likewise Winker, just seems to have kicked off in the last day or so, why, who knows, perhaps a colony or two within 100m of my apiary? Either way in one day (since 10am) I have a trap with about 50 wasps in it.

    Jaspers!

A noticeable increase in wasp activity over the last two days in Yorks and earlier than I recall in recent years. I have been closing down entrances on a weak hive and x2 nuc's and setting some strategic wasp traps today. Time for the annual debate .... Protect your weak colonies as well you...

    Wintering Swarms ?

Since not covered in the thread so far. By all means winter feed as usual but the higher relative surface area of a nuc and lower critical mass of bees (esp if a late swarm) means they will burn stores quicker. As a matter of routine I suggest you should be placing a well insulated feeding eke...

    bait hive success?

My single bait hive has had 5 serial takes this year (End of April to 2nd week June) but it then stopped in it's tracks. Not even a wayward scout to be seen since. Reasons ?...... Weather (only really good patch was last to weeks of May here)? Early swarming? Poor forrage meaning slower...

    The problem with being wrong...

Being wrong is part of learning and development Being contemptuously derrogatory when right - is, well, just unnecessary We should all accept the former with grace and ensure the latter is avoided. Note to self. To-Do: a) polish halo b) make sure finishing touches to Ark completed ;)

Fawns November sale 2012 at Wragby

"Fawns (always) have an online sale afterwards, prices are a little higher" and "Everyone is very polite until the bell rings then you get elbowed out of the way. Go in a group leaving someone to stand guard over the proposed purchase pile!!" - too true :-) and "Fuel costs" (I bet fuel is...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Got stung, and again, and again !!! Removed second brood boxes from two sets that I combined on Thursday (Q+ & Q- in each case). I am away on business for an extended period from Monday so a window of weather and opportunity - that the Yorkshire mongrels did not appreciate - and very clearly...
