    Black around lids

If it is around the lip of the jar where it contacts the lid and filling contaminated the lip with honey then it could be yeast/ mould growth where the honey exposed to the air ( on the outside of the jar neck/lip/thread) has absorbed moisture from the environment making it a viable growth medium.

    Changing to 14 x 12

If you have old comb or suspect disease then by all means Bailey Change. If not then keep critical mass and utilise all brood and an improved chance of a harvest and Demaree (the method is well discussed on here). R

    Mr Bee ?

..... and he still speaks fondly of you. He's finished with field work and has a desk job up at the national bee unit now, but I see him in and around the coffee shops of York now and again. By the way he's a man city supporter and never forgave you for the red blob.

    ambrosia bee fondant

Steve, thanks for promoting my video / recipe. It is available directly on the forum under the vids tab. You can sub for glucose powder and water at approx 8 parts powder 2 parts water, but the final fondant is not as stable ( water migration). I measure glucose syrup as a vol because you can...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Still a few ins of snow and <0'C. Confirmed all is well from fresh capping on top of snow. Interested to see the route taken by deer. Disappointed that one stopped to p1ss on my middle hive stand and another nibbled a 2nd stand could be worse - no sign of woodpeckers!

    double 6frame nuc?

A nuc to one is almost a full hive to another! I have two 6 frame nuc's at the mo; except they are 6 by 14x12 frames so not far short of a std national BB. But then I run 14x12 as std and if I need to I can dummy down to 3/4/5 frames in my 14x12 nuc's but still maintain frame size consistency...

To clear the Snow off entrace or not

:iagree: True, but throwing a bit of snow over the entrance to ensure reflected light levels don't confuse is unlikely to cause any harm and may do some good. Mine? well we had 5/6 ins over night, so mine are blocked up anyway!

why are bees on top of frames?

Unclear on the rationale to give pollen supplement this eary in the year? Feels far too early to be supporting laying / stimulating them. What is your thinking?

    Adding water to Fondant?

.... but if we get a warm spell and you have localised higher water activity you do stand a chance of it going mouldy at that point. Remember the cluster will be at around 30 all being well and that heat can take the same route as the bees up to your exposed fondant. I would just give them the...

    Winter Losses

:iagree: Bad luck Eddiespangle, sounds like you went into it with a suspision of a weak colony. You can be pretty certain that without your help they would have had a higher probability of failure. I have some 6 frame 14x12 nucs, one of which is over wintering a Sept11 swarm, similar to you...

    food hygiene certificate

Infant botulinum is a good point to raise in the context of this thread. As an environmental organism that can be present in honey through natural foraging characteristics (mainly for water as it happens). It is outside the scope of control for a beekeeper / honey producer. Infant botulism can...

Good book for beginners - recommendations please.

:iagree: Cramp is an excellent starter read, Hooper is a superb general reference but his style can be pompus and he assumes a level of experience that a new starter simply doesn't have. That said if you have got as far as Hooper then there is a wealth of knowledge out there in many good books...
