    Strange residence

It does look like CBPV. Is the Apidea overcrowded?

What to do with a small cast swarm

I'd make sure it's kept warm and generally give it some TLC, and then see what happens.

Why use a nucleus box rather than normal box?

Some people like to use one of the various 'The Nucleus Method[s] of Swarm Control' because you can put the queen on a single frame of brood and leave it on the original site and the flying bees will return to it and have a lot of work to do. Other people don't like this method, or prefer to use...

    Brood box or super?

They've got enough stores to last for quite a while so it's probably best to stop feeding. The usual "rule of thumb" for Nationals is to add a super when there are 7 or 8 frames of brood. If you really want to add a super now you could put it above a queen excluder and above the feeder board -...

    Cedar or Pine?

No, National and National Hybrid aren't the same thing. Poly hives are warmer and cheaper than cedar, but are best painted before use. Same as pargyle, I wouldn't swap my poly hives for timber.

Swarming adventures with flow hive in France and lessons learned

I'm assuming you're learning from French beekeepers, but I wouldn't have imagined the bees the other side of the Channel would be so different that their emerging queens will always kill all other queen cells and that 7 day inspections during the swarm season wasn't essential.

    Slow year??

Phew! Had me panicking for a moment. Made me think I'd lost a whole month of 2016!

Density of hives in a particular area

It's always worth putting out bait hives! :D Beebase data shows only the number of registered apiaries, not the number of colonies in each apiary, and there's no way of knowing how many unregistered beekeepers there are.

    Finding an out apiary

I wish! There's absolutely nothing within 30+ miles of where I live.

    Flow hive video

There's nothing wrong with foundationless frames, but if beekeepers are using Langstroths their frames need to be strengthened with either wire or fishing line otherwise it's likely that new comb will fall out.

    Can someone please explain this?

I'd say you're right and you had another swarm looking for a home, or a ready-to-swarm colony's scouts are checking the new, and easier to move into, box over. Here's hoping they move in, and you'll get a second colony to look after. :)

And how long has the colony been in the full sized box?

Relocating a bait hive and swarm

Yes, you can move them tonight. Just turn the entrance disc to shut them in before you move them, and open it once they're in your apiary. Now there are bees inside you may find the box is heavier and more awkward to lift/move than you expect, so can you get some help lifting it down from the...

    Cleaning honey extractor

How can there be any combs to extract from a colony with AFB when the whole lot will have been destroyed by the inspectorate? http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/index.cfm?sectionid=26 Control of AFB All infected colonies are destroyed. The first stage is to kill the adult bees by tipping a bit of...
