    New virus?

Seems as though it has bee around for a few years now... I called it the Danish Pastry Virus, because the capping looks swirly like a Danish Pastry.... some took a dim view of this descriptive term. Hivemaker posted some of my images... Giles Budge seems not to be interested... samples have...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Managed... despie yet another swarm collection... to get to the 25 OSB Rose hives in the Cornish Native Black bee apiary... haven't lifted a lid on them for over a month due to having to check my bees local to the EFB swarm incident! No queen excluders to worry about and all had queens laying...

    Maisemore sale

Maisemore delivered my broods frames and wax within 3 days of the order... but The Beekeepers Wife does have a persuasive way with folk especially when a £1K purchase is on the cards!!! In spite of collecting out of reach swarms we still seem to find time to make up the boxes and frames and get...

    too many supers too soon

If you just wanted them cleaned out you could have put them under the brood with a 9mm lath to give an undefended entrance... depends if you have help in lifting! Chons da

    Age of grafted larve

I seem to get better results by placing the day 14 queen cells directly into the mating nucs, then if emergence is a day early or a day late it is of no consequence. Similarly ( day 14) if hatching in an incubator.... unless you are raising 100s and need the hive space! Chons da

    Silver mine swarm

Only pen I had in my pocket! I keep the pink pen for "datifying" drones ( That's the Boy Bees!)... also orange and purple.... our drone supply colonies can get to be a kaleidoscope of colors Chons da

    European Foulbrood Suspected

Well done! Now let us all be on the look out or EFB.... particularly around Kit Hill in East Cornwall.... a beekeeper somewhere has lost a blue marked queen with a swarm infected with EFB.. just hope the SBI finds them and deals with the situation in the time honoured way (...

Thanks C Worry is that somebody close by has a colonies infected with EFB that this swarm emerged from. Destroyed with petrol last night... a horrible death for the bees... a thousand tiny screams... then total silence. I did not sleep very soundly last night! As for the "Danish Pastry...

Elation and then dismay... Sorry to hear the news, Guy. They usually recommend shook swarming if the colony infection is less than 20%; above that it becomes destruction. Trick is to feed and build the shook swarms before wasps and robbers become active. Me too... sad and harsh.. best to destroy...
