    Ouch

Normal bee suits are not sting proof. Mine is a good make and recommended by my association when I first started, and was the type the local bee inspector wore. One colony a few years ago stung my arms about 6-10 times through the suit whilst I was moving a BB. This year a bee went up the arm of...

    Moving a WBC

Yes you can make a floor but will need a travel screen on top if the floor is solid. I've done it but it's a right faff. Itma's suggestion is probably the best bet - you could borrow a national for a few days whilst you do the transfers. Make sure that the out apiary is secure - I suspect WBCs...

Anything to worry about, besides Q/C

If you walk a virgin queen into a colony it will usually seek out the resident queen and kill it. It's very easy for a new beekeeper to get overwhelmed when this sort of thing happens. In an ideal world it would be best for an experienced beekeeper to help you until you get this sorted out...

HELP! Advice! I think a swarm has turned up in my "hive"

Why not ask an experienced beekeeper to have a look and help you? If there are frames in the supers they could be robbing any remaining stores, however, used uncleaned beehives do attract swarms!

    Hi - Bee's nest found...

Best guess looking online is that they could be tree bumblebees - Bombus hypnorum

    Hi - Bee's nest found...

I was asked to look at some bees in a work colleague's garden. They turned out to be bumbles but she would not allow them to stay, despite my assurances due to her new born child. They were in a bird box a couple of feet from the rear door at shoulder height. I moved them to behind my shed but...

    Maisem00re sale

I'm surprised to see a sale at this time of year - has demand dropped so much?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went to the out-apiary today to check the colonies. The old queen in the artificial swarm is going great guns with plenty of capped brood, I've left the feeder on for now. The emerged daughter hive not showing any signs of a mated queen but still early days yet. Bees tetchy still - no way I'd...

    Maisem00re sale

I was referring to this specific sale in my post, not all their sales.

    Maisem00re sale

Their sale seconds are in the same ball park as a N Wales supplier does normally as far as I can see. Maisemoo also won't ship sale items either.

    Any swarms reported in Yorkshire

Melt beeswax and some olive oil together then as it cools mix in some lemongrass oil. Keep in a sealed honey jar. Put an old dark comb in the bait hive (I also put in a couple of undrawn frames either side of it but you could use more old comb) but otherwise empty. I usually just put 3 frames...

    Help!

If you have enough bees why not introduce a frame of eggs or a sealed queen cell and let them make a new queen? Surely one of the experts could spare a frame of eggs? Just a thought......

    Any swarms reported in Yorkshire

Bait your existing hive/s and see if one comes to you. Place bait hives in friends and relatives gardens too.

a fellow beekeeper with a queenless or drone laying colony might welcome a sealed queen cell......

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's Mid May and this morning I had to give them syrup as they were low on stores. Not just me either - spoke to another local beekeeper who had to do the same. Dull, wet and cool here today in the North West although it does say it will brighten up later.

First Winter and I have a couple of Questions

It can be a mistake to be lulled into a false sense of security because of low varroa numbers on the drop board - which really only just helps to make an educated guess at the mite load. The mesh floor can also get progressively clogged with candy and other debris over the winter stopping mites...

    Why not think about rehoming?

The Many Tears website is worth a visit if looking to adopt a dog. It can sometimes be a bit upsetting to read how they have been treated in the past though... http://manytearsrescue.webs.com/dogslookingforhomes.htm
