    Varroa help please!

I have good eyesight but always carry a magnifying glass in the top pocket of my bee suit. I find it very handy (especially for spotting eggs in poor light), and they are quite cheap to buy.

    aggressive bees

I now have to agree. I've kept bees in the garden for about 5 years and have never had any complaints. This year they became a bit followey and I got stung on the shoulder on the patio. I then moved them to an out apiary where they'll be staying. I've had them swarming because I could not...

    aggressive bees

Killing a colony is a big step to take, burning the equipment as well maybe a step too far!

    Varroa help please!

If you've not seen it already have a look at this..... http://scientificbeekeeping.com/an-early-summer-test-of-mite-away-quick-strips/ It may help understand any reaction the bees display when using the product. If you have heavy infestation of varroa you must act as soon as possible. Have you...

    aggressive bees

One of mine act like that but they are in the middle of getting a newly emerged queen mated. It's a roll of the dice really. A few years ago two queens from the same mother produced one colony that was calm and nice to work, the other I had to put on a wax jacket under my bee suit with the...

Happy and not so Happy days :)

Been there, got the T-shirt. Copped one on the eyebrow a few years back. For me it took a few hours to develop, hope you have less of a reaction!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Unfortunately this type of cool wet weather is becoming the norm here in the UK at this time of year.

    Keeping a hive warm

Same as Veg. I use the extra fine tip like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNI-POSCA-MARKER-PC-1M-EXTRA-FINE-TIP-FULL-RANGE-of-14-COLOURS-/300727009518?pt=UK_Crafts_DrawingSupplies_EH&var=&hash=item4604ba00ee

    Membership card out of date

We went into Bookers when the scheme first started, filled out a form and got a Bookers card through the post. Their customer services just asked for a receipt for beekeeping equipment rather than the membership card to prove I kept bees! That was the only time I have ever shown my card to...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Topped up the rapid feeders this morning. Bees in the emerged queen hive are still following and being aggressive. Drones are buzzing around the entrance so it looks like mating flights are taking place. The drones are ignoring their sister colony. Hopefully they will calm down once the new...

    Keeping a hive warm

When we had the house carpeted a number of years ago I kept back some of the biggest offcuts. I have enough squares to put a few on top of each crown board during winter. I also have them for nucs. Celotex seems quite pricey.

    Keeping a hive warm

+2 I use carpet offcuts the same size as the crown board all year.

    Your thought

Bit risky for the sake of a foam entrace plug that takes a couple of seconds to fit. Why take the chance? Besides moving colonies in the dark creates increased trip and fall risks.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Been raining here for most of the day and cool. Visited the hives and put a honey jar full of syrup in the rapid feeder of the old queen part of the A/S as it had run out. Will make some more syrup today and check again tomorrow.

    Your thought

It's not just stings that can injure you moving bee boxes. A couple of years ago I was moving some in the garden and there was an audible ripping sound from my back. I had torn the ligiments and the pain was the worst I've ever experienced. I couldn't move and was taken to hospital by ambulance...

    Your thought

Definitely 2 x 90 degree straps and veil up when loading and unloading for me. I also have the veil behind my head when driving so I can pull it on quickly if they somehow get out. Moving hives in a hatchback family car like mine is not recommended!
