    Such a waste

It's a real bummer that. Wax moth are terrible this year. Had a box of old comb destined for melting down completely overrun - cannot believe how many larvae there were. Burnt well on bonfire night though! Cold snap should help.

    Rhombus bee escapes?

And remember to put the board the right way up when putting between supers - so the rhombus board on the bottom underneath. You feel a twerp when you don't (in speaking from experience ). They're brilliant though, you'll never go back to porter escapes

Gardens of Suburbia : Forage month by month

Michaelmas daisies were smothered at weekend with honey bees. My mahonia is just starting to flower - they love those.

They were not here a week ago

A friend found similar on top of a fence post. Been well protected by bramble cover. 7 drawn frames. Guy who went and removed them though said hardly any stores so you may have to feed them really hard.

    Virgin Queen decision

And the bees have no issue in dispatching a queen either if it's warranted

    Wearing wellies

Thorn you must have really annoyed your bees - that's a long way to climb until she decided to sting!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Day off - no apiary work but had to remove a sting from my baby daughters finger. Stung in the car - no idea where bee came from but bizarrely both children stung in just over a week (having never been stung before). Babies are tough little things though cried for ten minutes then fine despite a...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My little lad (3 yrs) got his first bee sting - not from mine though, from walking on a tired worker on a Halkidiki beach. Got him right on the end of his little toe. Fortunately limited swelling or reaction. Little man took it well, let me scrape the stinger out. Amazed how many foraging bees...

    High moisture honey

Depends temperature you store at but I had a batch start going up to 8 months after extraction. Was shocked it took so long, would normally expect sooner

    Cutting Off a Queens Mandibles

Don't see the point because as Finman says a decent queen can give you more than enough brood for the season - it's how you use the brood to best effect that will give you your rewards. As for squeamishness, I don't think any beekeeper can be hypocritical about clipping wings unless they can...

    MAQS- 21 day treatment

I never had a problem using MAQS it's just got too damned expensive

    Queen getting through Excluder !!

Sounds a sensible plan to me for dealing with brood in the shallow.

    Extraction problem.......

I've had a very dark honey that is very thick and slow to spin out. Some locals have said hawthorn to me - is that dark folks and quite thick?

My bees won't clear out of the super

Rhombus are so effective - although did put one in the wrong way round the other day! Lots of angry bees came out when I lifted the crown board.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Finished summer extraction (have no balsam around me). No problems with bees or wasps getting in to garage unlike last year. Wasps not a problem yet... Noticed honey bees on my victoria plums today. Whilst extracting noticed had a lot of dark honey (had some earlier in season). What creates...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

As did I, been a decent year for me - blackberry came just right with the weather. No Balsam nearby so that's it until ivy.
