    Bee Keeper Survey

Got one too. Grammar and most of the spelling correct, sensible questions, no cyrillic lettering, links to genuine FERA website, not requesting money, no references to penis enlargement/Nigerian orphans etc etc. I expect it's genuine.

    Lanstroth V National hive

hysteresis (Langstroth did removable frame hives first and did them well enough that any marginal benefit of successor designs has been insufficient to overturn their dominance)

AS without increasing hive numbers ?

Good description of vertical split with modified snelgrove in beecraft April 2012, worked well for me last year.

    when to super ?

Like that idea. Though don't suppose 2-3 sheets of newspaper will have fantastic insulation properties (but must be better than nothing)

    Winter losses 2012/13

Bulgarkraniomedditeranean... Don't know what their/your bees are like, but sounds like a good holiday destination. What's it like? Any essential Bulgarkranian phrases before I book the easyjet flight? ;)

What colour is your bee suit?

I've got white too. Heard lighter is better, and that bees (like tsetse flies) are particularly attracted to dark blue. Personally I'm not convinced, as wearing darkish blue jeans below a jacket/veil hasn't been a problem for me so far... Whatever you wear, try to avoid looking too much like...

Anyone else watching this? Glad I'm not the only one who struggles to find the queen...

    Bee sting desensitisation course

Thanks for the link pbh4, that's really interesting. NICE threshold for considering a treatment to be cost-effective (ICER) for the NHS is considered to be around £20,000-30,000 per QALY (ie UK gov'ment/taxpayer happy to stump up to £30000 for an extra year of healthy life for each UK citizen!)...

    Inherited Bees

Hi Matt By now you will have established the truth of the old saying "Ask two beekeepers a question, and you'll get three different answers." As a fairly recent beginner myself, I suggest not getting too carried away with some of the more involved advice on here. I certainly wouldn't ever...

    sting reaction

drstitson- you had iv adrenaline ready? Shurely shome mishtake... In anything other than a closely monitored hospital situation (and even then, not often outside of a cardiac arrest) I understood intraMUSCULAR (im) was the only way to go. (Just in case anyone reading this ever tries anything...

    Ivy in flower

Haven't noticed ivy flowering round here. But my bees are finally drawing and filling the super they've ignored all summer... with a much darker honey than I've seen previously. And they're flying in and out like they mean business. Any ideas what's got them going?
  12. MattC

    Ow!

Seconded. You've just described a non-local (systemic) reaction, this could progress to something nastier still with subsequent stings and you should take it seriously.

Too late now for making increase?

Thanks for the replies. Weather looks like its turning messy again next week so maybe uniting now, splitting a week or so later and buying in a mated queen might be the most reliable option. Did want to increase with my own stock though...

Too late now for making increase?

After more advice from experienced beekeepers on here! I AS'd my only colony late June. No sign of a laying queen and it must be nearly six weeks since emergence (which would have been in the middle of the wet weather). I've put a test frame in but strongly suspect will be queen -ve, so I'm...

    Evidence-based beekeeping

I suspect 'evidence based beekeeping' is about where 'evidence based medicine' was 30 years ago. Plenty of research out there, but no systematic approach to reviewing the evidence and no great sense of obligation to incorporate it into practice. And at one level, I'd prefer it to stay that way...

    new laying queen question.

How long to give a virgin to mate and start laying before giving up, and merging splits from an AS'd colony back with the original queen? It's over 3 weeks since the new queen would have emerged and I haven't spotted her, and no sign they're getting ready for her to lay (in fact the brood...

My bees are going on Saturday

Very sorry to hear your news Freethorpe. Re the desensitisation programme, as a recently started new beekeeper I would hesitate if I were to become sensitised, even with a centre nearby. Substantial investment of NHS resources for something that's at the end of the day a hobby/lifestyle...

Swarm preparations, timing of inspections and artificial swarm

After looking through my bees and Ted Hooper, I have a quick question for the more experienced folk on here (ie almost everyone). If your colony appears to be making definite swarm preparations- ie larva in a QC with royal jelly- then it's time for AS. That much is clear. But what if you see...

    Artificial swarm options now

Been following this thread with interest. There was a swarm control method outlined in Beecraft a couple of months ago which divides brood frames equally between queen +ve and queen -ve halves of a vertical split. I was a little surprised to read this because my impression matched the responses...
