    Are mouse excluders necessary?

B&Q - 21 mm square finished timber abut 5 quid for a length that makes 4/5 blocks (can't remember how many I got out of 1 length) and just add a normal slot, then at 90 degrees a few 8mm holes/slots cut into it for a mouse guard entrance Fits Pains 14x12 poly perfectly.

Queens on same frame for 2nd week?

I had one queen come out of the crown of thorns after marking, right up through the mesh. She is a small one and is mated!

Rapid scan method for varroa counting.

Don't known about meths but I'm sure our Irish beeks will have used Poteen to make up their Thymolated syrup!

    Still learnin'...

:iagree: Once I forgot to do one side zip on the veil. After about half an hour I had one sting to the nose and 4 others inside, followed by a few hundred outside, who were brassed off at the long time I had taken to try and find their Queen! Had no choice but to open it up and scoop the rest...

    strange coloured honey this year?

Bet they can't get near the hives either as the young bees will be hyper on the E numbers

    Advice -combining nucs late season

They were just a couple of "insurance" nucs after re-queening. I intended to give away the old queens to anyone who had lost one, but one of the nucs in particular has really made an effort to survive, hence my idea to try and boost the numbers. Had a quick look in the weaker one tonight and...

Aint got no lecithin, can i use an egg instead?

I paid £6.00 incl postage for 375 gram of lecithin of the feepay website. Would emulsify enough for the whole of the forum, but when compared to the total cost of Apiguard the thymol home-brew is still cheap. I expect if I seal it up well and keep it dry the lecithin will still be OK next year.

    Advice -combining nucs late season

Pete, Another good idea but I don't think they will survive in anything bigger than a nuc, as there are only three frames and a wild comb in total.

    Advice -combining nucs late season

Some great ideas here. Don't think I have time on my side to gradually move them together,so I'm thinking... Just move them all onto the one stand in the one nuc using your method of sugar etc. and cage the good queen. Then block the entrance with grass to keep them in for a day or so, then...

That's sounds feasible! Will await more suggestions before deciding.

    Just finished a cutout!

Make sure you seal up all possible ways into that area, because it may be a beacon for next years swarm or even one in 5 years time!

    Advice -combining nucs late season

After re-queening recently I have two very small colonies in Q+ nucs (kept for insurance) which I would like to combine with the best queen for overwintering. Here is the scenario Both in same apiary but 10 m apart Both are in borrowed home made wooden nucs, no removable floor :-( One has two...

    Sugar shortage !

Big supermarkets loose money on sales of beer but there is a mountain of it in the aisles at all times.

    Buy in the UK.

Yes you are correct they can do, but unfortunately many of the companies there take short cuts and use inferior materials if they can get away with it. I know a company who gets expensive hi fi equipment made in China to their specific design and requirements. They sent out their designer to...

my first ever mourne heather honey.

Doesn't need to be show quality to sell. Depends what you strained it through. I'm no expert but mine goes through one of the stainless double mesh strainers, the type that has extending arms that sit on the honey bucket.

All the best ideas are simple but effective. I'll knock a similar one together for my next frame construction frenzy ;)

my first ever mourne heather honey.

Just find a local deli or farm shop and see what they are selling it for. Personally I would aim high, if it's a quality product you will soon get repeat business by word of mouth.

My bees do not like Hivemaker thymolated syrup!

Some thoughts Maybe that hive doesn't need it at the moment. Possibly they don't known it's there. The feeder holes are blocked up! They hate Thymol

14/12 frames Q abt Bottom bar

That's what I like about this forum, so much help and fast too. Seems like I will try it with two piece and see what happens. I am anal about getting things square and true anyway, but will check them carefully when assembling the new frames.
