    Solar extractor tray metal?

What's wrong (if anything) with a disposable aluminium roasting tray such as the current Lady DD uses for the Christmas turkey? Saves the hassle of trying to clean the infernal thing.

    Anyone else got this book...

There is another book 'Bee-Keeping For All' by Tickner Edwardes, in which he gives plans for the Tickner Edwardes hive. This looks like a Rolls Royce of a hive, with a double skinned brood box (but single walled super). I wonder why it did not catch on.

    Out Apiary ethics?

A travelling container of washing soda solution - to make sure your hive tool etc is cleaned thoroughily before moving on.

Molving hives less than 3 miles

We moved our hives two miles in May last year. A small handful came back to the original site - the others were too busy collecting nectar. I guess one main consideration would be how freely the nectar is flowing around your new site.

    First artificial swarm for me!

I might have popped in another frame of sealed/unsealed brood, too - just to keep her happy. And possibly also a frame of drawn brood foundation.. ...but then, when I tried my first AS, I slipped up by deciding that a rather butch looking drone was the Queen - that colony took some time to...

    Queen Drone????

I have a hive wich I am pretty sure has a laying worker (pepperpot pattern and all sealed cells for three weeks have looked like drone). I had intended to let them live out their days, assuming that the hive would die out without my help: there are still some workers about, but not large...

    Hello!

And there I was thinking you were referring to 'The Better Half'! Our flat pack Thornes 'Bees on a Budget' hive went together fine - and is still going strong into its third year.

    Out Apiary Rent

Being a generous old git, I give two jars per hive (but then, I only have the three hives). Farmer seems content, his wife is more than happy to be able to serve her B&B guests honey from on site hives. And I am happy too (well as happy as a DD can be!).

How much time will I spend beekeeping?

Please understand that this is not meant to be a put down ... but ... if you have to ask yourself whether you have enough time to devote to beekeeping at present - then you don't.

    Hayfever and Honey

Isn't that odd? I am finding the same sort of effect with headaches and gin!

    Which sugar??

Igenerally use cane - on the advice of the expert who trained me. But I know plenty of others who do not - and their bees appear to be as fit as mine!

Thank goodness for good beekeeping friends

Sorry to hear your news. Do hope you are fighting fit again very soon!

    Pompous men in beekeeping

Have to say I rather agree old thing. Was a bit of a shock to me, after a lifetime in a profession where pomposity was non-existent, taking up a pass time where it was so prevalent came as something of a shock. Still, when I feel that people are being a little OTT, I find a good stiff...

    pepperpot brood

Is the sealed brood worker? If it is all drone then you may, like me, have a laying worker.

    Protecting my back

I have found that delegating the heavy lifting of full supers etc to the current Lady DD has helped my back immeasurably.
  17. T

Bet you didn't know so many hive types existed

And what about all those that are NOT patented (like, it would seem, the Tickner Edwardes)?!

    Reacting to the bee stings

The current Lady DD decided today (for reasons unfathomable to me - but then she is a woman), to share her suit with a number of bees. Result was a quite energetic dance performance by Lady DD, and the loss of at least a dozen bees. A trip to the doctor and liberal quantities of antihistamine...

    Have I a drone problem

Poly Can you say why you killed the colony off, rather than just letting it fade away? (I ask because I think I have either a DLQ or a laying worker in one of mine and have so far chosen the line of least resistance). Secondly, presumably once that colony has gone to the great heatherlands...
