    Very dry weather

in london we have had no real rain since April, and the brambles have gone into survival mode and flowered early. Their centre buds have formed fruit. A few near water courses or late flowering varieties have yet to flower but to me the bramble flow is over, so it is going to be a long june...

    Another ‘Another swarm cell question’

i agree with o90o that well stocked 14x12 going into winter hardly ever needs fondant. As i celebrated by big 70 birthday this year i went away somewhere warm for 6 weeks February/March. The only hive i had a problem with was one i had on a university shared apiary, The other beekeeper placed...

    Another ‘Another swarm cell question’

you will not stop them once they go into swarm mode, so you need to do a swarm control, whether that is a AS, demarree ,3 frame takaway or wally shaw that's up to you However next time, i suggest double supering your buckfasts, and not be afraid to super as early as 6 frames of 14x12 brood...

    Varroa EasyCheck

i agree with Pargyle, sugar role works well enough for a quick check, you arent doing a scientific research project i use a small mug to scoop up the bees that i use with apidea (~200 bees)rather than count

    Still big varroa drop

There is some american research that says in a temperate climate then the cull ate of Apiguard in large hives with top ventilation is around 67% not 95% as per the Italian trials. I now always block feed holes when using apiguard.

How do you take out hive entrance blocks?

if you have a stuck entrance block, use a hive tool to split the box off the floor then use a wedge ( rubber door wedge or wood) to hold the brood box a 1/4" up But i never remove or change my entrance block from medium entrance, if i need to close or reduce it for wasps i pin a piece of...

Asian hornets in the UK. A chance of stopping them?

if you read Prof Martin Book on the Asian hornet, his view is that trapping queens has the reverse effect in producing single large colonies that produce a great more queens for the next year and reinforces the common two year cycle as found with other yellow jacket wasps ( Vespula). This is...
