    When to stop

Hi all, probably been asked a million times before... This is the first full year where I have had supers get filled, replaced, filled etc (up to now, lousy beekeeping and or weather has prevented success) I have been taking off a full super at a time as we have had really late OSR and fear...

    Rapid feeder for Beehaus

Hi there, i always use a regular tub feeder (inverted type with mesh circle on top) in my beehaus. Has worked well for years, fits over the clearer board with the white section taken off. Have you tried that? Gary

    Feeding new colony

Guys i wasnt being serious...Yes feed as much as you like but then know what to do when there is no space and they swarm in september! my attempt at a lightheartd post... Personally i feed as little as possible. Still, it gave you another opportunity for a snipe Finman. Well done!:winner1st:

    Feeding new colony

Yes feed, feed, feed. I have no experience of ambrosia so cannot advise on your question but keep feeding and feeding. It will save their energy as they wont have to leave the hive and forage which of course is a much better option for the honeybee. Oh and maybe ask your mentors to teach you...

    Wasps

Hi i have tried them and they are rubbish. All they do is provide a nice place for wasps to sit on while they plan their next move. Dont bother. I use the jam/sugar/vinegar/water mix as suggested but with a couple of drips of washing-up liquid as i think i read somewhere that this removes the...

    Beehaus Advice

Hi simplywords I have a beehaus (for about 3 years now), i am also a little confused about what nucs you are getting with the beehaus. But let me assume from what you write that there are 2 nucs.. Yes indeed you can have 2 colonies in a beehaus so put one in each end with the divider in the...

    Under-developed queen: survivability

Hi there, just interested to know why you would 'harvest' queens. Is that part of queen rearing? or was it in your hive?, i havent heard of it before. Gary

    OSR Watch

Latest OSR Hi all, just bumping this up as may be useful. Anyone know the state of 'yellowness' in mid beds? The couple of fields i use as a yardstick are green more than yellow now.. Was thinking (if ripe) of harvesting the final crop weekend after this coming one. Gary

Angry Nasty Tetchy Aggresive Naggy Etc

:iagree: i posted a comment last week on a thred similar to this. My garden bees are the same, so bad that the garden is a no-go zone. Doesn't matter what the reason is.. and if you fix it this time..the chances are that they may turn nasty again, for several reasons as stated already. the...

    Red cedar allergy!

Hi All Just got a new red cedar hive, and nailed the metal runners to it this morning. Started sneezing and itching looked at my arms where the boxes had been resting as I was nailing, to my surprise I had blisters on my skin! Anyone else experienced this? Gary

    Grumpy Bees

MandF, thats the whole point I think "local association" - with lots of intuition and experience - they probably keep their bees calm by using lots of knowledge. I've been beekeeping for 3 seasons now (in the garden) and this year has been terrible, the garden is a no-go zone, have to mow grass...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hi Sir Quej, congrats on your first inspection! if it helps, I always have this at the back of my mind which helps to keep me focussed - otherwise I just tend to stare at them pointlessley. So, the 5 things I look out for on a standard inspection are: 1) Food 2) Space 3) Queen-right 4) Disease...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What a day yesterday! have two colonies in the Beehaus (following AS). All good but had to leave them for 2 weeks as was travelling for work. The AS side - didn't see the queen but a couple of eggs and slightly bent eggs (4/day old).. lots of brood, and 5 sealed queen cells. Decided to knock...

    Unusual Behaviour

Hi Racey, mine do the same..just enjoying a bit of cool evening air on the balcony..nothing to worry about. Do you have an open mesh floor.. One thing to check is that they do have enough ventilation, I posted a note in the beehaus forum yesterday with the same question, the beehaus does have an...
