    Feeding

Just re-read original post I thought it said it was syrup STORED in a frame that was being given as opposed to syrup that would then be stored in a frame. My preference would be to give a frame of stores if a hive seems low on stores at this time of year.

    Queen Rearing Advice

possible downside is that you appear to be artificially selecting for "swarminess"

Mesh in floor "bad fit" and warping

yes it is fitted in the recess. I measured the mesh and apparently it is the wrong size, they are sending me the correct size. I tried to cut with tin snips but the ones I have were, to put it mildly, not up to it!

When to use a test frame

If you other colony can afford it I would add the frame of eggs. If nothing else it should give them a boost if they don't need it for queen cells!

    Feeding

JBG, I suppose needs must, if they are short on stores and you have a frame of food (which may be last autumns stored syrup) then so be it, I don't see that you have a choice if that is all you have! In the scheme of things if they bring in a couple of supers worth of honey one brood frame of...

Mesh in floor "bad fit" and warping

Yes, it is fitted correctly, no chance of it going in the wrong way. Contacted Ts and they reckon the mesh may be a fraction to0 wide.

    brood!!

congratulations on your new queen. One of my favourite sights in beekeeping is a frame laid up wall to wall with eggs!

Artificial swarm without finding the Queen?

I did what Erichalfbee suggests last year and it worked fine for me!

Mesh in floor "bad fit" and warping

Yes it is a national, the mesh goes from the very front of the hive to the very back, it is not as wide. Will give them a buzz.

Mesh in floor "bad fit" and warping

    You haven't noticed it then?

Mesh in floor "bad fit" and warping

Just putting together a budget mesh floor from Ts. The mesh seems a few mm too wide and wants to bow. I could probably use the pins to force it flat at the ends, would that do? Anyone else noticed this? I have the orientation correct as it is 3-4 cm too wide the other way. Many thanks!

Confession of a negligent beekeeper... and request for help please!

oakbear, just on the suggestion of requeening: Am I right in saying that you currently have a queen that has either survived by herself or is of a lineage that survived by itself unaided by beekeepers? Is this a good trait? Did you also say that she was strong enough to lay in three boxes...

Hive boxes With or without nails?

I got a set of nails with each super/brood box. Maybe double check the box and email them.

    Bee removal

I think blocking them in (if possible) the night before might be the better option. If the bees are killed off then there is no-one at home to keep the comb , honey etc in order. An invitation for mice, or dripping honey and nectar in hot weather.

    They swarmed

A shame you lost them, the exact same happened to me last year! I gave the remaining flying bees, the frame of brood with cells in a nuc to a fellow beek starting out, which is now a thriving colony.

Were the nails from the frame there?

    Split a hive?

Fair play to you for getting started. If possible get some help with the first inspection. I would be more inclined to have a look at what is in there before deciding what to do. You may have enough bees etc for a split but you may not! I would say form a plan for your first inspection,: Check...

    Got stung!

If it is of any help, I believe my symptoms have become less severe each time. Now it is just a pain at the time of the sting and then itchiness for a day or two after. The insect bite creams also seem to help with the itchiness. All stings on the hands so far though, I price I am happy to pay...
