Whole colony deserted, leaving eggs, brood & honey behind.

How secure is your site ? Just thinking aloud but could someone have just stolen the bees and left the hardware .Any signs of disturbance round the apiary ? No bees left at all is a bit odd . G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Formic pads on the rest of mine yesterday . Checked the three at work this morning . 7deg and flying well .

    Ashford or Miller feeders

As above , plus if you go for 4 inch timber for the sides it will hold enough syrup to fill the hungriest of hives . Saves you going back time and time again . G

Pollen in supers, how to remove it?

Just store your supers as normal , the pollen is unlikely to cause any harm . Next Spring make up your first super with frames that have pollen in them , I know a couple of folks on here who , if they have a super with stored pollen in use it each yr as the bottom most box , just above the...

    Is my melter too hot?

Agreed , wax has to be pretty foul to be rejected . I saw a stack in our local branch in Windsor that made me cringe . G

    scavenged frames after extraction

Pretend they are supers that need clearing . Put them back on above a clearer board and in 48 hrs bee free supers . As above dont leave supers out in the open for all to feed on . Lots of fighting and dead bees will be the result and a chance of disease transfer . As Rab points out , stop...

    Invert Sugar

Dont forget to add in the extras to your 80p . Heating the water , containers , general aggravation and sticky kitchen . Also no need to worry about it fermenting , in feeders or frames . G

    Brush uncapper

We use a Swi nty brush uncapper and it gets through about 400 + supers each yr(not this one) . It works well but did need a new brush after 2 yrs and the cost was shocking so we had one made up from elsewhere . It does make a nice job as it takes the top of the capping off but little honey with...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

All supers off now. Made a start on formic acid pads on two apiaries , two more to go . Most are showing as big a brood nest as they have had all season . Only a few should need feeding which is a blessing .

Badgers knocking of the hive roofs

Deeper hive rooves is the easy answer . The can only push one side or corner at a time so the roof jams before it clears the top of the hive. Keep you busy making a few of them ?? Roll on the cull . G

    How much

I would have a look at the usual outlets and judge it from there . He will need to undercut the regular price to get people interested I would think . G

How Much honey did you get this year?

Frankly I think I will be pleased if I get an average of 20lb from 26 working hives . Worst yr ever and I dont think the problems are over yet . The big test will be how many get through Winter with Queens that I think may have been poorly mated . G

    some advice needed

Are there enough stores in the Brood Boxx to see them through Winter or are you thinking of using the super as the supply ? If you are extracting the honey from the super for your own use , no you cant treat with apiguard with the super still on . G

Brood being built on wrong frames!

Agree with both the previous posts , she wont lay drone at this time of yr even if they do draw it as drone comb . Get the colony as big and healthy as you can for Winter . G

    Pig sty inspection

I am still intrigued how they can build that brace comb below the qe . Was the brace comb hanging between the frames or was the qe sitting above the level of the top of the brood box ? Did you have a small eke or something on the brood box ? G

    swarm question?

They might but thats missing the point . When you agree to collect a swarm , collect all of it , not just the bit you want . Once you have attended I believe you are responsible . If someone gets stung by ar*ey bees its down to you . G

    Queenless or Not Pros

If its good natured it sounds queen right . If it was a cast then you may have seen the queen returning from a mating flight . Check out the thread re queens taking 8 wks to come in to lay . It does seem to be an odd yr for mating and laying . Also when you say you fed sugar do you mean in the...
