    Distance from property

In our first year, we kept our hives some 30' from the house, which was good because we could watch them almost at will. We discovered during our second year, however, that the average tetchy bee can fly faster than our average bed & breakfast guest could run. As a result, they (the bees...

If you had to give me just one piece of advice........

Enjoy your first year as a beekeeper secure in the knowledge that the second year will be infinitely worse. (And then, during the second year, cling on to the fact that things will get better in the third year).:biggrinjester:

    Pollen Super

Months. But I would be inclined to bung it back on now and let them carry on working it.

    Happy Father's Day, everyone!

:iagree: Not only that - one was also permitted space in the kitchen to jar up the (rather meagre) harvest of dandelion honey taken off earlier.

    Nasty Bees

Have they always been like that? Are they hungry? Are you sure there is a laying Queen in there, and if so is she laying a good pattern? How old is she? Is there anything about you (don't take this personally!) that they might object to. I had to lay off the aftershave when it became...

    Potato flowers

A local farmer warned me a couple of weeks ago that he was about to spray his potatoes (they are for seed). Too far away from my hives for the latter to get caught in any drift. Checked then on internet and with my spray liaison officer. Both indicated that honey bees do not work potato...

    Pub open.

Does this invitation mean that B.P has now finished his exams? If so, how did they go?

    Drought. what drought??

I can report with confidence that the drought - at least in my part of Cornwall - is now definitely broken. Should anyone on the Isle of Wight see my bees floating past on their hives, perhaps they would be kind enough to send them back where they belong.

Check again in a week's time - the answer should be clear then

    Controling your children

I date the deterioration in children's behaviour back to the introduction of central heating. So few chimneys to clean nowadays...

The same warning goes, presumably, for Brut?

ideas for hedgerows dirty weekend in the smoke

Horseguards is not worth it on a Sunday. Check the House of Commons/House of Lords websites. You used to be able to do free tours (not sure about weekends). Don't forget the Cabinet War Rooms (Churchill's) at the bottom of Clive Steps (King Charles Street off Whitehall). Although I worked...

    Hello from Falmouth

:iagree: And if you are going to the Royal Cornwall Show next week, pop into the Cornwall Beekeepers' Tent and chat to some of the old hands in there - they will be full of great advice not only on bee keeping, but also on bee acquisition!

    Quickest way to dissolve sugar

I find that a drop of Angostura Bitters, followed by a healthy measure of gin dissolves a sugar cube very quickly and satisfactorily - a drop of soda water makes the whole thing into a most palatable drink! Or have I missed the point again?

    Queen Marking

YOu know how to make a chap jealous! I spent over an hour on Wednesday going through one of my hives three times to find the (unmarked Queen) so I could do an AS. Never did find her. Will have to try again today - if she has not already scarpered!! :cuss:

    new bee keeper-advice needed

I don't generally get involved in the contentious discussions, but ... I have yet to see any evidence that pixie dust doesn't work, either! You can download a really good leaflet on Varroa and its treatments from Beebase.

    An inspector calls

I also had an inspection this week. As always, the Inspector was really helpful. Went through the hives with me and provided reassurance that things were as I had thought. I find it useful to have the comments of someone who not only knows bees, but has also seen a great many more colonies...

    Keeping bees for profit...

I'm just in my third year of beekeeping. I could break even ... ...if I could just sell each jar so far produced for £250!
