Is it ok to go through supers on hive with a virgin queen in?

Ah! Well in that case, and assuming that there is a QE between the brood box and the super, my inclination would be to whip off the full super and bung on a new one with the minimum possible disturbance. But as I said... there are others here with much more experience. Maybe one of them will...

Is it ok to go through supers on hive with a virgin queen in?

What would be the purpose of going through the super? The principal reason for going through a hive is to check that there are no Queen cells - and thus a risk of swarming. But you know the answer to that question. So unless you have reason to believe their is any disease in the hive...

Nuc with no space to lay?

The experts will be along in a minute to give you more reliable advice. But if it were me, I would bung them into a hive as soon as I could (perhaps with a dummy board at each end), with another couple of frames to draw.

    Whats that little hole for?

You two have obviously not met some of my former colleagues from the darker reaches of Whitehall!

    Whats that little hole for?

Forgive me if I shudder. A good number of those I used to deal with in my previous life were enthusiastic nail pullers, too! I prefer not to think about these things these days!

    ben pullan

Many congratulations Ben! Wish I was 16 again (but knew what I know now)! I am sure the exams will go swimmingly.

    How to clean extraction equipment?

:iagree: On this occasion at least, what works in Yorkshire works fine in Cornwall, too!

    Netweather.tv Summer Forecast 2011 "Shades of 1976"

I'm so impressed by all of you who can remember '76 - I have difficulty remembering yesterday! Forecast must be spot on - awoke this morning to cold, damp drizzle!

    which newspaper

Mine appear happy either with the London Gazette, or with the Court Circular pages of any newspaper.

    First GCSE exam tomorrow.

Now now Mel - you can't possibly have done your GCSEs 20 years ago. That would have made you about 5!

    First GCSE exam tomorrow.

Best of luck, Ben - not that you'll need it!

    Too embarrased to ask

I am aghast! Surely even in the wilds of the Midlands everyone know that the only two choices for spraying a swarm (if they won't come quietly) are pink gin or brandy alexander! :laughing-smiley-014

    Apivar

Forgive me for being naive. I do hope someone can enlighten me. Is honey produced in the EU not freely (some would say too freely) available in the UK? And is Apivar not widely (some might argue too widely) used throughout the EU to control varroa? If so, and if Apivar produces the dire...

In my experience, the calmest bees are the dead ones. Trouble is, they are not terribly productive!

    Advice for a council tennant

I have not had a similar experience. But... I would be inclined first to respond to the Council asking precisely what issue had been raised, by whom and when (even if they chose not to give this information, it might put them on notice that you are not going easily to give in). I would then...

    heavy supers

Is there a difference between a capped frame sitting in a super on the hive and a capped frame sitting in a super in your kitchen/storeroom/wherever? I rather doubt it - provided that you don't let the nasty beasties get at them. Last year, when I removed supers before I was ready to extract...

Any bright ideas? - a new one on me!

I may be showing my lack of experience and knowledge here (though not for the first time :o). But how about treating them as three separate swarms. If in eight or nine days' time there is no sign of eggs in one (or two), then you could try uniting them.

Change of home for my bees

If you do an AS, won't you end up with two hives - the original and another. What is the new type of hive?

    Gloopy Honey

Yes - fields of golden dandelions, to coin a phrase. Ought I now to be getting excited???

    Gloopy Honey

I have just extracted a modest amount of honey from one of my hives (). It is, to use a very technical term, pretty gloopy - ie the consistency of golden syrup or even malt extract. Could it possibly be OSR honey (although I have seen none near the apiary, there may well be...
