Is it A good Idea to keep a Bee journal ?

I am only in my second season but I would say a journal or hive notes are absolutely vital! Especially with more than one colony - I would never keep it all straight in my head. I make so many mistakes that I need to document the circumstances and outcomes of all of my actions to learn. I list...

    Bl***dy Woodpecker

Our local association apiary has been experimenting with woodpecker deterrents - so far I think bubble wrap and dangling cds are the winners. Any other successful strategies recommended?

Q hatched - should we removed 2nd QC?

That is clear now thank you....too much thinking time however ... If we go tomorrow and 2nd Q has hatched do we scour through, find two (I'm not too hopeful of spotting newly hatched skinny Qs), squish one or leave them to battle it out and hope for no cast swarm? Don't want to fiddle...

Q hatched - should we removed 2nd QC?

Thanks PH, so - we destroy 2nd QC with our fingers crossed in the parent colony and we should just leave them to it in the supercedure scenario?... ooh these bees keep you on your toes!

Q hatched - should we removed 2nd QC?

Hello, advice needed please re queen cells. We did an AS two weeks ago, hopefully successfully, and all has seemed well since. The new colony has settled well with the Q now having provided us with five frames of brood and all working well otherwise - good progress in the super etc.. The...

Another cautionary tale! Always wear your protective gear!

My husband does not react badly to stings on his face, neck, leg - anywhere really except the back of his hand. If he gets a sting there - twice now - it swells right up. His hand balloons and then it creeps up his arm and the swelling increases up to his elbow! Really odd, the Dr was bemused...

    Bad Beekeepers Club book

Just as an aside while the next in line readies themselves - I was lent the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't know how anybody could expect a manual from the blurb, it's plainly a light read. I found it charming and self-deprecating, I think a lovely book.

    Hive being scouted (advice please)

Expecting to be shot down as I am a new beek and haven't had a swarm so total theory gleaned from (mostly here) more experienced people - consider putting a QE under the hive once the swarm is in to keep the Q in hopefully (though as she is skinny for flight it may not work), don't feed for...

Is there a 'certain' time that bees swarm

I have been told by a very experience beekeeper that they prefer to decamp between 11 and two on a hot day. True to form ours buzzed off last year at 11.30......

Did an artificial swarm...and then they went and swarmed anyway

Did an artificial swarm...and then they went and swarmed anyway

Sorry to crash this thread - but it is on the very topic I was about to post about. So, we saw 3 uncapped Qcells in our colony lastFri so did an AS on Sunday. The Qcells still uncapped and the q present and correct. The new hive on origial colony site etc. We left the 3Qcells - only bit I'm...

    hanging bees

bee-smillie thank you to all three of you, really grateful for all the tips - have checked OMF but no joy! that would have been a treat but hey ho. It seems to have been a swarmy strain so maybe best it stops here tho they were/are a lovely black bee, shame but there you go. More or less...
