    Heat Mats for warming honey

I have used a reptile heat mat coupled with a thermostat, again designed for a avarium when making a home made warming cabinet. It worked well and at a fraction of the price of buying a warming cabinet. Got it all from Ebay.

    Queen cells

Do I infer from your reply that the egg will be sealed 8 days from the day the eggwas laid irrespective of how old the egg was when the bees determined to make a queen cell?

    Cushman AS hive swapping

I believe the reason for the swap is to reduce the number of flying bees in the hive with the QC's to prevent the first Queen to hatch leaving with half the bes and further caste swarms. See Hooper

    Queen cells

The books and this forum make it clear that it takes 8 days before a QC is sealed and the queen ill hatch on the 16th day. However if the bees raise a queen from an egg more than 1 day old e.g. 4 days old will the cell be sealed after 4 days i.e. does the time table for sealing a QC and the...

    2 Brood boxes

Have 2 of my 5 hives on 2 brood boxes this year. I did this because I had two prolific queens. Both are Langstroth hives. I read that if you use two brood boxes they should be swapped over to help prevent swarming every two weeks. My question is, is this correct? To date the queens have laid...

    Nasty but vigorous bees

feisty bees As drones provide half the genetics and a queeen will mate with several drones it may be that the sperm of a particular drone is responsible for aggressive beens and not the queen per se. That's why some aggressive colonies settle down after a while after that drone's contribution...

Could there be too many beekeepers?

The real problem with selling Honey is that being a good beekeeper does not automativcally mean you are a good business man. It's all down to marketing and I'm afraid that is very amaturist in this country. You only have to look at the dire labelling beekeepers use, lack of marketing, use of...

    Wild Garlic

A farmer is allowing me to put some hives on his land this year. He told me that there is a lot of wild garlic growing near to where the hives are likely to be positioned. Does anyone know wether it will adversely affect the taste of the honey?

    Which hive???

I've got Langstroths. Both poly and Wooden. Don't see the point of of having Nationals with brood and a half. Why not have the appropriate sized brood box in the first place! The other advantage of Langstroths is that you can saunter along to Thornes sale after the scrum has ended, as I did this...

    'seams' for oxalic acid

As a newbie is it common practice to use oxalic acid? Already used Apiguard going into Autumn. I still have brood and as I undertsand it you shouldn't use Oxalic acid until broodless. I have 5 hives. 2 of them langstroth Polys and the other three wooden Langstroths (2 homemade). All with queens...
