    there is the possibility the queen will go up into the super and start to lay. when you are ready to put the QE back on make sure the queen is down in the brood chamber, put QE back on and any emerging bees can pass through QE then fingers crossed the cells will be cleaned and used for storage.

    took QE out yesterday to see how they do over the next week, will try insulating the super as well. Just wondering if where we have placed our hive is ok, its situated in a clearing in a wooded area, plenty of bramble flowers and the usual woodland plants, will there be enough for them to forage...

    hi all, got my bees 3 weeks ago they covered 9 0ut of 11 frames put a super on them without QE to encourage them up, worked ok. went on hols last week so before going checked them. covering 10 and half frames and started drawing super. found queen so put QE on and went on hols. 9 days later...

    first inspection of our new colony

    me and the wife (tracy) did our first inspection of our first colony today. had them a week now and things look good. plenty of stores, all sorts of brood and tracy found the queen. they cover 9 of the 11 frames and have drawn one side of the tenth. put a super on and will check in a few days...

    finally got our bees friday night. a nice strong swarm covering 9 frames. went and put a super on them today and will leave them till next week to settle. finally me and the wife are beekeepers. big thanks to the people on this site, a great wealth of knowledge, im learning loads just reading...

    How many generations of beek's in family ?

    it was all my wifes idea. she did a one day course a couple of years ago but rightly decided one day is nowhere near enough learning. things happen and time passes but last year decided to make time for ourselves and started going earlier this year to essex bka. its been great, now got a hive...

    direction of the frames

    hi all does it make any difference as to what way the frames in the brood chamber face in conjuntion with the hive entrance. if the entrance is the front does it matter if they run from side to side or front to back and if so why.

    What trousers to wear?

    before i got my bee suit i was wearing a smock and veil with jeans on and to stop the bees going up my trousers i wore gators and my comfortable walking boots.

    is there no one near colchester prepared to share thier knowledge with us. Have been going to lessons with the ebka but there is a large group and the man taking it (Derek) is doing a sterling job but it would be nice to get a less crowded learning experience and relieve some of the pressure...

    hi all im just starting out and have heard of a book that is good to carry with you when visiting your hives, is it the beekeepers field guide by david cramp.not got bees yet but want to read up on beekeeping and get on a course this year ready for next spring.
