    Salutary Lesson !

I think you have already seen the signs. I don’t tolerate followers, especially ones like you described. Those bees won’t care if it’s you or a passer by/land owner they sting. I had colonies like that last year and took too long giving them chances, it makes for unpleasant beekeeping imo.

    OSR

Great, thank you @Ian123 and @ericbeaumont

    OSR

I have a question about post extracting OSR. This is the first year i’ve had it near me. Am I correct in thinking if I reuse the supers, the new honey stored in those will crystallise faster having been seeded in the cells with the OSR remains? How do I get around this? Only use those supers...

    Aggressive Hive

I would do as suggested above and remove the hive to another spot so you can find the queen, you can always split the frames between nucs till you find her. I’d then dispatch her, i’d also remove any drone brood, no point in letting those generics loose on others. One option is you could take...

Where do forum members (those who buy their queens) buy their queens from?

I got some beautiful dark (AMM) queens from a guy in Aberdeen called Stiliyan Georgiev (You’ll find him on Facebook), really good value queens and my favourite queens i’ve bought, really gentle and productive colonies and a he is a really helpful guy! I also second mbc queens, I have a couple...

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

I got round to checking my bees at home yesterday, absolutely thronging with bees, full of bees in every seam, 8 frames of brood, mostly capped, 2 sizeable patches of capped drone brood (I did spot a drone last week) and they’ve started filling the supers I gave them back to clean up last week...

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

Checked the bees yesterday, all (bar one drone layer which was obviously a late supersedure as she was unmarked) off to a good start, some on 6 frames of brood already.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked all my out apiary hives, moved doubles nucs into full hives, lots of stores, looks like fresh nectar being brought in. One grumpy unmarked drone laying queen so removed her and united with another much nicer hive. Started bailey comb changes on 3, including the united hive (should have...

    Castellated frames or hoffman style

Do you mean the frames have plastic spacers on the lugs not the spacers that fit the brood box? I have both, one thing I do like about using spacers is there’s less chance of squishing bees when pushing the frames together. You can use both together, but you need to add the spacers to the...

    £99 honey!

They also claim “Our Manuka Honey has won numerous international awards”, this might be so but all the awards they have mentioned on their site is for packaging or exporting, so perhaps a little misleading?

I plan to raise some queens from my best colonies. To try grafting for the first time. Not to expand hive numbers too much (except for nucs).

    Species identification

Queen wasps emerging from hibernation now, they can be quite big.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Watched the bees piling in masses of orange pollen and spotted a very early, very large drone! Spring has definitely sprung, spotted queen bumbles today, a queen wasp, lambs now in the field behind us and there were quite a few owls hooting away loudly last night, can only think they are...

What does the BBKA basic modules say about insulation and ventilation?

I doesn't come up in the syllabus. There is a question in module 1 about the yearly cycle so could be discussed there but not necessarily.
