What did you do in the Apiary today?

Haha beekeeping by numbers thats funny but yes ive learnt this now also, just checked its water content and its ripe n ready to jar. I need to source jars now, as with everything bee related this year ive been caught on the back foot.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cant believe we had to take a super off of 2 hives and extract today. 3/4 capped ors and even though it felt really early to be doing it, im glad i did. We just caught it in time before not getting it out of cells. Ive decided to throw away the notion of what should be happening when, these...

Easy bite sized chunks of swarm control

Found this and thought it well explained and helpful to any newbees struggling to grasp the complexities of swarm control...

    Nuc of bees

I agree but use my phones notes section. I dictate into it during inspections and sometimes photograph for reminders also. However you keep track, do keep track , its easy to forget important details.

    Obtaining bees in Kent

Hi there, ive just done an artificial swarm. Im not interested in increasing my colonies. I would be happy to create a nuc up once the virgin has mated i planned to recombine and hated the idea of squishing a beautiful buckfast. If you can get to dorset theyre yours. Im not interested in money...

Moving new nuc - time required

Go with the direct move. Leave them closed in for 24 hours. Ive used fern fronds in the past to get in the way of the entrance, it immediately causes them to orientate as they realize theyre not in Kansas any more. Good luck.

    Which hive to buy???

I will do. This is the first year OSR has been within 3 miles in a big way. That and silly temps here in february onwards have caused this.

    Which hive to buy???

I did as you advised drex and murox this morning. They are definitely not being efficient with space. I had a good look through every frame. Swapped boxes around and put the least filled frames(2 of them ,all others no room) in top box in the middle. I wish my extractor fitted brood frames as i...

    tad out of my depth

Ahh ok i understand. I did alot of manipulations last year. Baily comb chsnge. Turning one hive to 3. Requeening all three hives. So havent experienced what these girls can do when not interfering. It makes total sense to keep them seperated till the queen slows down her laying and recombine...

    Wax cappings and honey

After straining honey as described in above posts i get a Tropicana carton chop the top off, put the wax debri and all into the carton and pop in oven on a low heat. All the wax seperates from the rubbish and it hardens into a swuare block. Tho i love beefriendly's idea even more!

Bees on the roof of Notre Dame survive the fire!

I saw this story on bbc this morning it made me smile. I can just imagine bee gorging themselves getting drowsy, poking their heads out and wondering what all the fuss is about.

    Which hive to buy???

Thank you for the replies yes I have two supers on the hive and they're both filling nicely , will be adding another in a few days. No they weren't on double over winter , on my first inspection when the weather was warm enough I realised they were running out of room on single brood and they've...

    Which hive to buy???

I agree ANMAW but how fo i tell the little buggers theyre being inefficient. Going through yesterday i had (over the 2 boxes 7 frames of wall to wall capped brood 4 frames of bias with a bit of honey and pollen arcing over the top 4 of nectar/honey partially capped and pollen and 4 with huge...

    Death of a hive

Not to get involved in the *** for tat but ive got two of hivemakers buckfast queens. Superb queens. Calm prolific layers that are going like the clappers. Exmoor is still in england is it not.

    Which hive to buy???

You’ve double brood commercials? Why? As i explained in my post i started with commercials as thats the hive my first bees were in and alot of spare kit too. So i stayed with them. I am using double brood on two of my colonies as i have very strong prolific buckfasts that are increasing like...

    tad out of my depth

Thankyou enrico. You always give sound advice and explain things so well. What youve said makes perfect sense. Can i ask if i recombine when do i do it. How long do you leave the queen seperated from her brood. If the brood box in an a.s. raise a new queen when do you combine them back together...

    Very angry hive

oh dear i was in the same situation last year. my daughter said i looked like a white supremace running down the road in my suit to get away from them chasing me! i requeened with a calm buckfast reared in exmoor. i used a push in cage about 472hrs after i had squished the devil incarnet...
