    Bees cleaning supers after extraction

I was thinking storing dry won’t be as messy, less dripping etc. I think I’ll put them back on hive for cleaning. How long would be sufficient for the bees to clean them?

    Bees cleaning supers after extraction

Just extracted a super. Should I put the super back on for a few days for the bees to clean the frames? Then take off super and store for winter?

Nadir AND rapid feeder at same time?

Put a half full super under the Brood box, so the bees would move the stores upwards into the Brood box (which was very light). So far, that’s what they’re doing.... slowly. Could I also put on a rapid feeder and feed them syrup from above as well? I want to increase their stores for...

Two colonies on top of each other, with different entrances?

Bottom hive is a brood box only. I would have thought that inspecting both hives, would be like inspecting a double brood hive. Feeding the bottom colony might be tricky though.

Two colonies on top of each other, with different entrances?

I have a colony in a nuc almost ready to outgrow it. I should have been more prepared, but anyway... The next few days are hectic, and I just don’t have the time to start building New hive parts So......as a temporary measure.....I was thinking of putting the 6 frame nuc into a brood box...

Planning a new strategy next year…

What puts me off about double brood is the weight. They’re a nightmare to lift off when inspecting. Supers are bad enough!

Winter stores (or lack of ).

Is it still warm enough weather for feeding a weaker syrup ? (eg. 1 litre to 1kg)

    When to take supers off

Yes I was thinking that myself. A new queen of mine hasn’t started laying yet and I’m thinking it’s because there is little stores in the Brood box (although there is some above in the super) Could she start laying in the Super instead of the Brood box?

Correct way to nadir brood box

Yeah, colony is strong. I have a tunnel on it at the entrance to deter wasps, so hoping that should still be sufficient for this nadir.

Correct way to nadir brood box

Is that 100% guaranteed? I’m thinking of placing a half-full super under a virtually empty (of stores) brood box. Hoping that they’ll move the stores up into the brood box for winter. Then I can remove the empty super. Is there a good chance this will go to plan?

    Uniting two colonies

I might have to unite two before winter. Both colonies aren’t huge, but both Queens are laying very well. So, it’s just if it got to the point where I had to unite, I’d be killing a good Queen either way.

    Uniting two colonies

Did I read somewhere that some folk, when uniting two colonies via the newspaper method, leave a Queen in each Brood box? Is this advisable?

    Little or no brood

Should the forecasted warmer weather help with the current lack of stores? And if so, how quickly would we see a considerable stores increase?

Is it ok to feed syrup while Apiguard is on?

    What to do with suoer

I see. I thought it was only honey that was sealed that should be extracted. That’s what I’ve done in the past anyway.

    What to do with suoer

What about a super that is half full, having both sealed and unsealed honey? Leave it on until spring?
  17. BernardBlack

    What to do with suoer

Nah, not selling, it’s just for my own use. I thought as long as honey was sealed, it therefore had the appropriate water content?

    What to do with suoer

I see it’s not just me with a similar problem as above......... Brood box has brood, but little to no stores. Super full. Could I extract the super and feed them syrup? ........ And should the syrup and whatever ivy they bring in, sustain them through until spring? .......Or just leave the...

Putting Super below brood box for Winter

Can you explain nadir? It’s not a term I’m familiar with, or maybe I know it by a different name. Also, the reasoning behind doing it?
