Remember there are eggs and larvae in there as this was a combine from a culled-queen-colony and suspected-swarm-colony ala the question.

I just want to know if there is a queen in there so I dont lose the introduced one. I'll go ahead and check for QCs as described as I am not up for sifting.

Looks like I need to simplify the ask: Since from this combine I know one half was definitely queenless and one half was suspected swarm (so no laying queen and no VQ as QCs were removed) is my only option to observe QC activity to be sure? If QCs made post combine then probably they are...

Had a report of a swarm from Mother In law whilst out on Sunday... Was so confident that I has all hives understood and confirmed as "known" that i was shocked. Couldn't figure out which one. Discovered today the one was what I thought was without a queen and I had destroyed all QCc ready for a...

    Is it petrol time...

But you did destroy all those QCs, right? It sounds like your current situation is you have the same hive but with just a new queen? If thats the case then you MIGHT be fine...You'll need to leave them for a week (unless you have to 'unfondant' the new queen from her cage?) but don't be...

    Combine question

I would like to combine 3 hives. One is outside my apiary about 20 feet away and not close to other hives...The others are. The new combined hive site will be in the apiary....the 3 hives are single BBs with about 6-8 frames of bees. I plan to leave a NUC with a frame of brood on it to catch...

Good work but qcs have to go and get the new queen in a cage in there. Did you return the BBs to the original site? Id keep them separated and donate the supers to other hives for now. Get a new box with some comb and one frame of eggs at the flyer site and let them crack on with trying to...

    carniolan Queens

This I agree. I was brand new 4 years ago and now in my 5th. There were signs last year of defensiveness and this year much worse. Ive started rebooting as a result but will apply PH 3 year rule in future. Glad to hear PH words as it absolutely makes sense. Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk

    Brood + Super question

Ive elected for this season to try brood and a half for 6 of mine with 2 others on double. So far ive been fine but see hiw it goes over the course of a full 12 months. There are a lot leavers and remainers in this subject so Im going to try it out as I am atrracted to the Wally Shaw logic more...

    Brood + Super question

Keep your existing standard box with frames but take the shallow (what you are calling a super) off and let the bees grow to at least 7 or 8 frames in just the brood box...and those frames will obviously need to be drawn out...when you get coverage of 7 to 8 then you might add add the shallow as...

QR - Queen Retainer thingy (Aussie Bill)

Aussie Bill has been going on about some QR contraption or other that seems to be popular down under which fits over the hive entrance like an excluder box and traps any absconding swarms. Maybe something like this: https://pixabay.com/photos/honey-bee-swarm-trap-bees-hive-398883/ Seems to...

at what point do you move from weekly inspections ?

Ive got 8 out of 10 greens through supercedure and splits etc....So can limit the inspections then. Just always worried about odd against-the-rulebook second swarms....

at what point do you move from weekly inspections ?

This thread has gone sideways. Maybe Aussie Bill can tell us where you buy these queen traps or whatever they are and BF can lead the charge in investigation by opening another thread? As Eric Idle once said, "During the meanwhilst" I am interested to hear further views on standard inspections...
