I currently sell a simple 100 mm x 60mm cylindrical pillar candle, and am interested in expanding my candle range.
Moulds are expensive and my quandary is, should I simply consider expanding my range of cylindrical pillar candles, or are novelty shapes worth a try?
In your experience, what...
I started beekeeping 18 months ago, and have a strong case of bee fever.
I currently have 16 colonies across 2 apiaries (garden and out apiaries).
I'm quite entrepreneurial, having previously run my own little consultancy. I now work full-time as a business consultant.
I can see the...
I've just witnessed the same phenomenon. I'm in week 9 of Apivar treatment. Had previously barely seen any mite drop at all. In the past few days, there's by far the most I've seen all year. Admittedly, all dead.
I'm considering oxalic vapour treatment, to see if there's a further increase in...
Have quickly exhausted this year's beeswax harvest - I make and sell simple large pillar candles with it.
Am looking to buy at least 20kg. Best price I've seen online so far is £18 a kilo for 10kg - likely dropping for a bigger order.
Has anyone seen a significantly cheaper price, or know of a...
Insurance covers your equipment. Useful if the bee inspector tell you to incinerat your gear, due to AFB or bad cases of EFB. I think there's also some 3rd party insurance in there, I need to check the policy. You get £10m cover.
Good to hear you're feeding well and treating for mites.
I can't...
Get yourself on the next beginners course, run by your local beekeeping association. Starts in January.
That'll give you some knowledge and confidence to start enjoying beekeeping.
They will also help you with BBKA membership and insurance.
And, if you haven't already, you should register your...
Looks interesting.
I have a gasvap, but the blow torch has failed, and a new one is around £80. Plus, I found the gasvap inconsistent and a bit of a faff to operate.
I'd love an Instavap, but can't spend £400+.

If its 1:1 syrup, put 3.5 kg of sugar in it, to make it 2:1.
End of the day, just put a load of sugar in it, the bees will eat it. They don't care about exact ratios, they just want carbs.
Bees aren't proud.
The few bees I've seen flying were also bringing in pollen.
I left 20kg in all my Colonies after honey harvesting, most of that is already gone. A couple of very light hives had to have big slabs of fondant put on them. Will check how much they've taken down, on Sunday.
Dead drones in front of the 1 hive I have in the garden, today. For me that's the serious sign of winter's onset.
Few flying bees. It was cold windy and wet.
Have a lot of fondant to take to the out apiray, to ensure sufficient winter stores.
Also going to cut a few boards to slide under the...
For those wanting to buy bakers fondant. I applied for an account on the Beekeeping Supplies Trade website (https://www.bee2trade.co.uk/). Application was accepted.
They're selling 12.5kg of fondant for £18.95 a time, minimum purchase of 5 boxes.
The nice bit is that they charge just £9 postage...
Great to see some competition in this product space.
I'd also like to see an alternative to the Maisemore deep extension, which I think goes for over £40. It's the only deep extension compatible with the BS 3-in-1 and the Maisemore poly nucs. Maisemore currently have a monopoly on that product.
