Can you “seed” honey to keep it runny for longer?

Probably because someone could burn themselves! 🤷🏻 If we mollycoddle kids so much how do they learn to risk-assess??

Can you “seed” honey to keep it runny for longer?

No, crystal formation is made easier and more rapid by particles in a solution (honey in this case) or irregularities on a surface. I suspect the heating to higher temperatures dissolves small crystals already present thus delaying crystals growing. With some substances you can create a...

    New Information board needed?

"I've been doing it like this for 39 years!" is no guarantee it's right! I think the real secret is critical thinking at every stage whilst understanding as much as possible about bee biology.

    Varroa-resistant mites in Luxembourg

Me too! We don't need a second reservoir of mites! Hopefully they wouldn't survive queen wasp hibernation 🤞

Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

I sometimes do more than 3 treatments, so let's say 5. My number of hives varies 5-12, let's say 15. 2g per treatment. So 5x15x2=150g per annum. So 8kg will last 53yrs - I'll be 114. I reckon I'll have "stopped beekeeping" by then. 😁 The oak door drip rail I was planning to bleach recently...

Help wanted with trap out in the Oldham Area...

Assuming there was a frame with eggs in the donor frames then hopefully they are raising a new queen. I'll be back in a few days so could probably bring you a frame with eggs if in doubt.

My own queens have defensive workers

I've had daughters of my own local reasonably docile bees that produced offspring that were horrible - if I'd started with buckfasts I'd have been blaming it on that (as I did about 30+yrs ago!). The new daughter queen obviously hung out at the yobbo DCA rather than the gentlemanly one...

    New member saying "Hi"

Of course you are welcome! 👍 Be warned though - your curiosity may be piqued and you could end up on the slippery (but rewarding) slope that is beekeeping! 😁

    Walk-away split: reduce QC's?

I would select an open QC (or 2) at 5 days so the queen had been fed royal jelly for her entire development.
