    Beekeeping Show 25th

Was not a BIBBA guy I had my worst disagreement with...it funnily enough WAS the guy on the stand next door even before the public got in! Had some outrageous accusations to level at farmers with whom I have a very good relationship. Had some blindingly wrong opinions to voice....if the basis of...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

Quite correct. We are a bee farm first and foremost. The Jolanta unit exists alongside it and ITS primary role of breeding and nuc production for US. Sales of bees are a secondary, but rapidly growing, function. Ditto the equipment and foundation. We can buy artic/container loads, use part for...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

On the subject of the black/local bee people who came on the stand to make a point....they invariably had drunk the bathwater of a few prolific 'knockers' whose output and influence is disproportionate to their factual knowledge. They had weird ideas about what we do based on stuff that swills...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

That's right, Helen is my eldest daughter and has the brief to get the processing and sending of orders for anything other than the Jolanta's items organised. She looks after the sales of misc hive parts, frames, foundation, block wax and various other things...like we stock smokers hive tools...

Was not that bad! She only had a couple of them. Me too. The worst at shows are the ones who come to you when you have a queue, ask an innocent sounding question, which is merely the opening gambit for them to tell YOU about what they do for 20 minutes and that we should try it. My job at a show...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

Was really nice to see you there Dani. Always good to meet people face to face. Linnet, who waxed your frame for you, is my youngest daughter. A smart little cookie who is a really gentle and caring beekeeper too.

    Frame wire and brass rivets

Yes. Its ok on normal wire...not the very stretchy stuff....and not good on the very springy high tensile stuff we use nowadays. Will be demoing how we retension and rewax the stretchy stuff at the show tomorrow. Have taken a small pile of the soda boiled frames with us...to show just how clean...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Possibly sometimes not.....I always look for asilky streaking in it where the air bubbles at filling time have risen out leaving a vertical and subtle pattern..only happens when the crystals are very small and fine and they align along the tracks left by the bubbles...its always a really good...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Creamed is an interesting term.....has for some years now been used as an interchangeable expression for soft set or smooth set...neither of which actually require creaming. The actual creaming of honey...as in using a creamer to disturb the crystal formation and break it up so it no longer...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Yes, but they are not in Europe and not subject to UK or EU honey regs (which are pretty identical). Also...heating on its own tells you nothing...its the function of heat and time that causes...or avoids...the denaturing of honey as we know it. Destruction of enzymes....elevation of...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

I don't know of ANY pasteurised honey. Its a largely false accusation usually made by beekeepers, and those who listen to them, to create an artificial distinction. Raw is deliberately used to imply other peoples honey is inferior. I don't know of any cooked honey that can legally be sold as...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Linseed is a non nectar plant. The silence in the field reflects that, not the general bee health of the area. Its just of no interest to bees. Despite that there is at least one UK beekeepers offers linseed flower honey as a speciality.

Empty hive but huge amounts of stores

Without pictures of the central part of where the nest used to be we are relying on the description, and with no prejudgement of the expertise of the poster, is very often relayed innaccurately and the real story often jumps out to the experienced eye once pictures are available. Pargyle is...

    Honey Super Frames Advice

My advice is to keep the same spacing all the way up. The satisfaction of fat combs, and the marginal saving at extracting time are one side of the equation only..... We have always found that colonies on the same spacing all the way up congest less, have fewer issues with 'hanging out' in...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

5 members of my team...including Jolanta there about her queens, plus 2 guests (both bee people), plus me, .......so thats 8 of us. Telling them all they are to split up among the tables and not sit as an insular lump.

    Frame wire and brass rivets

I stock them, and the wax to fit...even though that would not interest you. They will be just like the pictured ones MOST of the time but had a sizeable special order last summer from a bee farmer who wanted them vertically wired instead, so the current stock...I have a couple of...

Is that a typo Dani? Or am I only thinking of my own brood that would be little B's?
  18. I

    Frame wire and brass rivets

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind...after two generations of messing about with wired foundation in UK style frames that strong prewired frames are the way to go...but then all our non UK friends knew that for a century. Spent a fortune drilling and wiring all our old frames. The combs...

    Susan Cobey

I think they recorded it and it will be up on the Scottish beekeepers site.

    Susan Cobey

Thanks for the mention.....but my input was minimal.....made it clear to Gino that I was not going to say much apart from at the very start as I did not want to eat into her time at all. So a brief intro and even more brief finish was plenty. As usual she was excellent.
