God I love growing our own

We plant really early which is why most of our tomatoes are over by the time the blight hits. We do it to avoid blight and because we like eating tomatoes in the summer rather than the autumn. But ..... we risk early frost. We have had leaves blackened with cold nights but it hasn't affected the...

God I love growing our own

We work on the colour of the seeds, once brown they can be picked but some like Blenheim orange will stay on the tree until winter and will sweeten with age, infact they turn into pleasant eaters.

Chillis cross pollinate with ease so even if you buy a certain seed sometimes they don't grow true

God I love growing our own

Our tomatoes are just coming to the end. The chillies have grown like trees and the red peppers this year have done really really well. Now realise they need pots far bigger than you would expect for a good crop. The largest chilly plants are those in the ground in the greenhouse. Beginning to...

Where to find land for Bees 2024

I understand your sentiments but I think all we are saying is that beekeeping is a bit unique but it is a business where you can try before you buy and I think that is important. No one wants to discourage anyone but if it was easy we would all be doing it. Good luck to the Op and anyone else...

Where to find land for Bees 2024

Have a click on the link at the bottom of this message. It always seems easy until you start, can I suggest you go into a hive with someone before this season ends so that you can see if many flying bees around you is a hobby you want to take up before you spend any money.

Where to find land for Bees 2024

Starting with four hives? I hope you have some experience, need to know a little more about where you are at and how prepared you are. Bees on other people's land comes with responsibilities. Not knocking you but I feel I need a bit more info before I offer advice 😉

    Confession time!

But the bees never cease to amaze me. Came out of last winter with three dead hives out of four. a few swarms later and this year brought me in over 200 lbs of honey which is unbelievable for my area let alone one decent hive. One of the swarms along, after requeening with a bucky gave me over...

God I love growing our own

We always plant too many chillies, been giving them to our village shop to sell on. Bags of mixed tomatoes on the gate are selling well. And , at last, after three months of none ....... WE HAVE RAIN...... everything was dying,

    Hello

Not really, if it is a queen from this year then it will hibernate over winter and start a new colony next year. It doesn't sound like solitary variety. You may see it's offspring next year😃

    3 queens

Sounds more like a play cup. It only be ones a queen cell when there is royal jelly in it

    Cleaning after wax moth.

I am using seven year old dipel. I would imagine it is useless. We need someone to buy a £50 pot and divide it into £5 packs. I would buy a pack but not at £50. Useful money raiser for someone! 😃

    Paynes, closing?!

Yep, no discs on mine and no internal roof which means they stick the frames to the roof. They are on stumpy legs too so the bees underfly. I generally only use the to collect swarms in!

How much honey, candles etc to take to a village fair

I tended to sell different size jars at fairs, that way there is no direct comparison between the jars at the fete and the shop/gate!!. Now I don't do fetes, I would rather try and keep selling at the gate for as long as possible

    Honey Cake Recipes

Sorry for the late reply, only just saw the message. We now use a good teaspoon of ground ginger and then chop up a piece of stem ginger to give a bit of texture, it is EVEN BETTER if you poor some warm honey over the top of the cake 😁😁 That looks a cracker though
