    Ivy honey

Ahh, so that's how that works. OK then I'd scrap the idea. Lol. If anyone wants to get some ivy honey, how do we get around to do it? It seems that it's always preached to feed them from Aug to Oct. But ivy only flowers around mid Oct to end Nov.?

    any oncoming sale from thornes?

thornes' seconds also now dont come with runners anymore. i think the 3rds also don't come with nails so yes use screws instead with a small drill bit to make pilot hole to prevent wood split if nailing through a knot

Smoker...should it be used at entrance before inspections?

i do smoke the bees at the entrance, but not to the point of smoking alot to annoy them, just a gentle puff, enough for them to get the note that i am coming, then lift off roof. i do find just using little smoke goes a long way. keep an eye on the ones that guards the frames (if they look like...

    Wasp power

i witnessed a foraging worker bee attacked by a wasp. Bee was landing on a lavender flower, once landed, the wask flew straight on to her and both fell on the floor, i had to step on them to squash both. Likely the wasp would have delivered the sting to the bee already anyway so worker bee would...

thats great, i last inspected the hive was about a 2 weeks ago (i inspect fortnightly now to avoid distrupting them ). this was a swarm captured in april and they had been very busy building brood (brood and eggs was right up to the edges of the brood frames) i reckon its all the young emerging...

Any idea what's going on with this hive?

Happened yesterday afternoon, for about 15 mins. then quiet down again. A friend said the hive is getting robbed, but i am not too sure, firstly because this is the strongest hive out of the 3 (2 hives and 1 nuc). then i looked at the varroa tray its clean as i cleaned it in the morning, and...

    Swallows

i saw similar with mine near my apiary at home too. a robin jumping around nipping a couple of bees, i think its ok if its just a 1 robin, but not sure if its alot as you described. just be mindful if its during requeening and mated queen flies off to mate and get eaten. and not sure what u can...

    extraction dates

ok i now learnt why the local association harvest honey in beginning of aug instead of end aug. there are fields of empty land around the apiary, and with this there is usually a gap in between late july and august of which the apiary managers previously had had bad tasting honey when the bees...

    Help, i think they're a bit aggressive

Hi, i do feel the association is correct, u should not be keeping bees until u had completed a course. which involves practical and theory. Tho not completely necessary if u have someone to guide you but it seems you had jumped in the deep end without a lifeguard to ensure u don't drown...
