    Unite complications

Hi BrianO. I'm certainly no expert but have asked a similar question to this recently. I was told it is likely the new VQ would kill your current Q as she is more agile. I'm interested to see peoples views as if my VQ doesn't mate soon I'll be in the same boat as you pretty soon.

anyone used tongue and groove flooring to make hives before?

Hi greggorio. Sorry this is a bit of a late reply but thought I'd respond anyway. I know the trouble with finding timber in France. My parents live there and trying to find anything similar to what we consider standard sizes here is near impossible. I have used t&g flooring to make some roofs...

Thank you very much, shouldn't be too stressful.

    Changing hives

Hi all, probably should have been posting in this section before rather than general beekeeping. Hopefully this will be an easy one. I knocked a quick temporary hive together using less than adequate timber to house an AS in an emergency. I have since made a suitable hive with OMF to replace...

    Kashmir balsam

Very true, not to mention the varieties of bees and hybridisation which has all but eliminated a native bee!

Is 2 weeks after due emergence long enough?

Hi, just wondering how you got on with your situation? I have a similar situation regarding waiting for new VQ to be mated.

    Reuniting after failed mating

Thanks for all the information and help from everyone. I think I will give it one more week before I have to do something. Either a reunite, which seems as though people see this as more risky or I have read about shaking the bees out and they will beg entrance to my other hive. This seems the...

    Reuniting after failed mating

Hi, the feeder is a 4 pint rapid feeder. It sits inside the super on the crown board and the roof goes on fine. But between the brood box and the super is the crown board which is exposed (edges can be seen externally). The roof is 4 inches deep so it doesn't cover the super completely.

    Reuniting after failed mating

I went down to my hives this morn just to check on feeding situation. The hive that I suspect is Q- we're terribly nowty but had plenty of stores, no eggs! The Q+ hive were there usually calm selves but had little stores and I topped up feed. We've had a hell of a rain the last few days and I...

    Reuniting after failed mating

Well that's encouraging anyway. Hopefully I'll know either way soon, got a wedding in France at the end of the month and I don't know if it's rude to ask them to wait a couple of weeks longer to get wed!!

Bramble in flower still for anyone else.*Pic*

I've not, but the weather hasn't picked up either!!😒 still having to feed one hive. Anyway, a dry week is forecast after today so fingers crossed.

Yes still here too. Some only just starting to flower as well!!

    Reuniting after failed mating

The hive in question has 3 frames of stores in BB. I guess as they aren't feeding any brood so they are ok. However, my other Q+ hive is being fed at the moment as they have hardly any. Whilst I'm on the subject of mating queens. How do folk feel about 20degree mating temperature theory. I'm I...

Thanks Jenkins. Seems like I'm Okay to give it another couple of weeks. I like your last signature, never a truer word spoken 😄

    Reuniting after failed mating

Hi. I was thinking: if I don't have a laying Q soon, this colony of bees with eventually die off. They will already be declining now and I thought (rightly or wrongly??) if they are Q-, wouldn't they be of better use strengthening my other colony? I am a new beekeeper and all advice is greatly...

    Reuniting after failed mating

Thanks for the replies. I don't mind waiting a little longer at all. Just reading some threads people say after 21 days the queen will be poorly mates etc. if this isn't necessarily the case, and you've had success then I'll give it longer. I'll read up on finding queens in the mean time. With...

    Reuniting after failed mating

Hi all. After a bit of advice for a possible near future situation. I performed an AS around 5th July and new Q hatched on 21st. Since then the weather has been awful, not been above 15 degrees and only had a couple of dry days. As of Friday 7th aug, new queen still not laying. The bees have...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Where did you get the wood rat from. I've seem them before and they look really handy. How many sides can you mortice at once and what router but do you use? It certainly beats cutting them with the table saw 😩

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Thanks 8ace. At the minute a table saw is what I'm using for housing cuts and cross rails. The groove groove cutter sounds like it'd be the thing to have. I only use the router for the rebated housing cuts for the front and back sections to locate into. I'll try and set a jig up for the housing...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

National Beehive joints Hi all, just wondering how everyone cuts their joints when building nationals. At the minute I'm using a table saw with a jig I made. They all fit together nice and snug but cutting out the notches in the sides takes me forever. Just wondering how I would go on if I had...
