    DLQ & buying new Q

Hi, I have one colony on National and one top bar. The National appears to have a DLQ. Everyone advises me to do a cut-out from the tbh but I’m doing this on my own and I really don’t think I can do it safely myself. I’m up against unreliable weather, only 5 years experience, a completely new...

    comb in fondant

I had forgotten that they might do that. However there is still an empty super (their winter stores which were finished about a month ago, judging by that being when they started on the fondant) underneath the brood box. Forgot to mention it. It'll be some days before the weather's warm enough...

    comb in fondant

I went into winter with a strong colony in an insulated national. Treated 8 seams with oxalic acid in January. In the last 10 days or so they've romped through the fondant having finished their stores I presume. Now there are so many bees at the top and they've braced up to the clear crown board...

    UK WRC advice problem

Thanks for that, very interesting. If the wood's outside at the mill are we going to have to dry it for months too? We have the space, just that it puts my plans back a few months! I had a photo of the brood box I've just put together, and the frames inside. Now I look, there are plenty of...

    UK WRC advice problem

Not on everything no, but on an awful lot of things yes! Savvy enough to ask far more experienced people when I need advice too!

    UK WRC advice problem

Doesn't green take months until it's ready? I would like this up and ready by end of April. There seem to be quite a few stories of people building with knotty UK WRC,and no problems, so I think we'll just go ahead. Thank you.

    UK WRC advice problem

http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/search.php?searchid=4027274 Thanks for the leads. This one didn't find anything though. We're building a TBH. I also discovered that Mark of National BS doesn't exist! I think he just didn't want to be bothered with such a small order!

    UK WRC advice problem

We just went to buy some UK WRC, FSC certified, where the timber yard advised against UK wood for hivesj because although kiln dried once it's on the hive the knots will shrink at different rate to the plank. Also that wasps and beetles would chew through it. Apparently Mark at National Bee...

    Honey showing 101

Wonderful! Hopefully that will be sufficient then! Thanks for the encouraging words!

    Honey showing 101

Thank you, I've sealed the Aroma jar in a plastic bag labelled DO NOT TOUCH! Unfortunately I'll probably have to open it and put the honey into a proper jar (although they're not judging on anything except aroma and flavour).

    Book recommendations?

Conclusion Had a look through the Rose Hive designer's website & slide show: http://www.-----------------/uploads/2/3/9/3/2393505/slide_show.pdf I think that the weight would easily stump me and I'd need an assistant! A brood box sized super full of honey would be completely beyond me, my...

    Honey showing 101

Blast. My secure Aroma honey is in a twist lid, and the jar is the taller jam jar type rather than the squat honey type. I haven't as yet found any rules about anything to do with it. I filled in the entry form very last minute. Luckily I ordered 1lb screw top squat jars today but it means...

    Honey showing 101

I'll be able to take the shame, just get better for next year! I can't change the honey, the girls wouldn't like that at all after all their hard work, so I'll take pot luck with the judges! They do have to be 1lb jars but there are different shapes and I don't know if that matters!

    Honey showing 101

When I discovered that there's an aroma & flavour class I decided to enter our honey as everyone says that the flavour is excellent so we've entered the Wiltshire show in a couple of weeks and I'm preparing the honey now. However, I know nothing about the process and would like to find...

    Book recommendations?

We're considering a TBH for next year, we really like the natural method. However we'd like to know a lot more about it first and wonder if anyone can recommend something we can work our way through before we start asking questions! Preferably a book so that we're not confined to reading...

    When in autumn/winter to insulate?

The tea cosy's fabulous! Don't think I have the staying power to knit one like that though! Good idea painting it, I'll do mine cedar colour! Thanks for all the advice.

    When in autumn/winter to insulate?

sealant type Is bathroom sealant safe around bees? I was going to use aquarium one.

    When in autumn/winter to insulate?

Okay, thanks very much. My insulation is really easy to put on and off, however it rather spoils the look of the lovely cedar hive!

    When in autumn/winter to insulate?

Hi, I'm insulating our hive because it's exposed and on the edge of a frost pocket. All I want to know is what criteria people use to decide when (as in season/month) to insulate! Thank you. Sarah

    Bearding and then some

Yes i did take out the first tray and the second had been in a few days. The temperature dropped lady night to single figure and most have gone inside. When refilling the syrup i could see that the hive is now full of bees again, and that there's little odd the fondant left. So hopefully that's...
