Buying a hive tomorrow - advice welcome

I think my advice would be to start with a nuc, that way you get experiance as the colony grows in size. As you have already discovered, they grow quite quickly at this time of year. Buzz

Would a queenless swarm move into an active hive?

i try to give them a frame of unsealed brood, this keeps them put.

    Nosema

My experiance of it is that if it is significant they just don't build up. I would feed them 1:1 syrup with fumidil now, they might build up to something in due course. Nosema can affect the queens laying capability, so even after treatment you might find they are not much better.

Did anyone go to the Lincoln Auction?

Just wondering what it was like and what rediculous price the "nucs" went for. Buzz

Can assembled foundation frames be stored?

sometimes it hepls to give them a little spray with weak syrup when you put them in, just encourages the bees to draw it out. Buzz

    Drone Genetics

As I understand it.with respect to genetics. quite simply there are more combinations than just 2. i.e. aggressive / non aggressive etc....Think about it, no two human individuals are the same, the reason? Because of the multiple combination of genetic possibilities. The key to selective...

Fondant and Pollen feeding when to stop

My understanding is that fondant will help to maintain the over wintered bees, but the 1:1 syrup stimulates HM into laying, thus helping build up. But, to build up as Rab said you need carbs and protein. Buzz

    queen cells

Hi gjb Welcome to the forum. Most of us could produce as many q cells as you could throw as stick at, so what advantage is there in traveling to pick up yours. i dont mean to be disparaging, but what could you provide a "selling point". Like, mother type, trait, etc Buzz

    Buzz your report re Nosema.

Thanks HM, you live (or not) and learn. I'm intending to treat all colony's with Fumidil B on wednesday. lets see how the Spring build up goes after that. Anyone know of any reported complications / losses associated with this stuff?

    Buzz your report re Nosema.

Hi one and all. I wasnt expecting to find my dead out published on the forum before I had a chance to absorb the results myself, but anyway. Happy to share my experiance with you all, hope something is learnt by all. The colony WAS a very strong colony going into the winter after coming back...

    Nozevit

Just wondering, has anyone used this stuff, either as a preventive or to treat active Nosema. Any papers out there. Cheers, Buzz

went to feed some fondant and saw one hive with 8 frames of bees

Just two comments 1. The super is not just for honey, you will hopfully see this later in the season:) 2. Sticking a super on will simply give the bees more dead space to keep warm buzz

Well it's too late now, Im taking early retirement and given in my notice!

Dont expect that a double brood box will in itself sort out the swarming. You may want to look at breeding less swarmy bees, this will certainly be an advantage if you have time to spare. Queen rearing involves acurate timing of manipulations etc...When in full time work this is problematic to...

Who killed the Honey Bee - BBC4

I remember seeing this a while ago. I thought then, as I do now, that while the loss of anyones livelyhood is tragic, as human beings should we not be surprised if we treat our bees with this contempt, nature will bite us back, I was too impressed with the handling, transporting and general...
