Cheap aluminium sheet for NUC roof ?

Try your local scrap metal dealer, they do sell as well as buy, I used to buy lumps of brass, bronze etc for turning, they sold it by the scrap weight, much cheaper than suppliers

    Wasp nest spotted

It's the same in this neck of the woods, no wasps about here either, on the other hand, more bumble bees than I've ever seen before. Regards Ray

    Home made Bee Vacuum pictures

Hi Dave, Yes an invertor could do the job, it depends on the output from the invertor and the power draw for the vac, say a 1.2kw invertor will run a vac rated at 800w but not the other way round. I was thinking more on the lines of running a 12v vac from the battery in your...

    Home made Bee Vacuum pictures

Brilliant, I love it and the fact that it's made from bits and pieces that you had around, your a man after my own heart not worthy As a very loose sugestion, would it work with one of the larger 12 volt car vacuum cleaners, one of those and a car battery would make it very portable. Regards Ray

    Disposal of Chickens

There are some allotments keepers locally who love to have the odd chicken or three running around, they're not bothered about the eggs (but the odd one or two are a bonus) I gather that they like them for keeping soil turned over, getting rid of unwanted insects, caterpillars etc and for the...

Septic sewage systems - keeping them clean!

Hi, We're of the grid too, our thing with oil, grease, fat etc is to tip it in a shallow bowl, add a jug of wild bird seed and as much old bread as it will take, mix it all up and stick it out for the birds, you'd be suprised at how quickly they clear it all up. We try to keep chemical cleaners...

    Bargain beehive

Hi All, Looking through the Bay this morning and saw this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beehive-national-w-red-Cedar-assembled-/261047970116?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Bee_Keeping&hash=item3cc7abe944 Seems to be a good price and if I'm reading it right 20% off for a flat pack, and no, it's nothing to do...

    Divine providence ?

My shed/workshop's about 20 yards away from the apple tree where the swarm landed so I dont think the PVA had anything to do with it, probably just one of those very strange coincidences, then again, if I get another swarm while I'm building hive No2 I'm buying every bottle of PVA in the local...

    Divine providence ?

One online blessing coming up  May your bees always return to their hives and your swarms land within catching distance, Amen. BTW, are you the Rev.d John Smith from Tadcaster ? I've worshiped at your local 'altar' more than a few times :cheers2: (dont worry the northerners will...

    Divine providence ?

They seem to be well settled in their hive now, we had a very quick inspection this afternoon, fitted the rest of the frames to the brood box and added a feeder just to be on the safe side, they've spread nicely round the brood frames and seem to have started drawing the wax but we didn't want...

    Divine providence ?

Hi All, Over the weekend I've been assembling my first hive, thus far I'd done the floor and broodbox, this afternoon I started on the roof. while doing it the nozzle of the glue bottle blocked up, so I unscrewed it and took it outside to blow it clear, as I stepped out of the shed there's a...

    This weeks stupid question !

Hi All, Thank you very much for that, I now know whats what :) The assembly instructions that came with the hive are good but I just couldn't figure out if they were a gravity fit or not. I took the precaution of loosly assembling the parts before I started with the glue and screws, I'm quite...

    This weeks stupid question !

Hi All, I've been busy this afternoon assembling a 'flat pack' national, so far I've got the floor and brood box sorted, the supers and roof are a job for tomorrow, this leads me to this weeks silly question, what holds the sections together, is it just gravity, should there be internal lips...

Oh! I think I'm going to like it on this forum :D Alas, at my age, the old addage of 'what doesn't hurt, doesn't work any more' really holds true:beatdeadhorse5: My other interest in life is restoring vintage motorcycles and the story goes, Coming in late one night, the wife says 'where have...

Hi, I left school more years ago than I care to remember, the coffin dodger part comes from my age, thats what the grandkids call me, well the only one that I could take as a username that is  It's worked out very nicely with our new neighbour, not something that I ever expected to...
