I have just been contacted about a swarm in LE2 Leicester, near the ground on a sign about rugby ball sized. Lady is very concerned and I cant attend - anybody else able to pick them up before the deluge?
PM me for her details
Just had a call about a swarm in a cherry tree in Cropston (LE7). It apparently arrived on Thursday and doesn't sound very big but still may be worthwhile for someone closer than I am.
Its about 6 feet off the ground.
PM me if you are interested
just that they are taking their time going in - the swarm was only put in this morning and today isn't the best flying day so the stragglers are taking a while to find their way in.
This is actually an observation hive. The camera has been running for three years now with the same colony (it has swarmed every year) but this spring it has not built up very well and the queen was laying poorly. I took the opportunity to replace the bees this morning after I caught a small...
I'm just running a small swarm I caught yesterday into the Sysonby beecam - nice new foundation and the picture is now better quality for anyone interested. I wont post a link but you can google "beecam".
The view has been returned to normal at the moment because the egg in the cross section cell hatched but then the larva disappeared - either died or the bees decided that cell wasn't suitable after all. The cross section cell is on a bit of brace comb against the glass and if another egg...
Yes I think that the "motionless" bee is probably secreting royal jelly - the egg was actually laid at least 2 days ago so should hatch today at some point.
I can't get it to work on Chrome either!
In case anyone is interested, I have managed to get a cross section of a cell on the beecam - there is an egg in the cell so hopefully we will be able to watch it develop!

They don't mind being lit with white light 24hrs a day - the beecam uses white light and they seem happy enough after a year. I use LEDs to illuminate as the bees seem not to like strong halogen lights and simply move to a different part of the comb - with the LEDs they don't.
