thanks all very much. yes def will be putting them on a double brood in the morning. work has been stopping me so far. Actually the 1st time Ive had to use a double brood here, surprisingly!

It's not extra space for brood they need, based on the information you've given us.
Get (at least) two empty supers back on them.

When clearing more than one super ( I have deep rims on my clearers) , I always put at least one empty super on under the clearer.
