Just captured a swarm from a tree in my apiary :) Put all in a nuke box and flyer all gone in. Should I shut the nuke until the morning to stop them leaving or should I leave the nuke entrance closed. I have closed at the mo. What's the best thing to do?

Do you have a queen excluder on your nuc entrance? If so, set it to that. They won't go anywhere without her.

.

If the queens in and they are happy with the nuc they should stay.....they must be from your hive ....is that number 4 ?

Yes, no 4 but only two queens. One is tdays swarm if it stays the other is an AS waitimg for hopefully hatched queen to mate.

On todays swarm i have place in an empty nuke box with a QE place vertically against the front, if works may leave for a day.

Question since its no doubt my bees should i put in a sugar 1-2 feed fram and should i put in some undrawn foundation frames if so how many ...4 pluse feeder?

Thanks

If you're going to keep them then yes you need to give them foundation if that's all you've got. To get them to draw it you'll need to feed them 1:1 sugar syrup. Since they're your bees and you know their health history you can feed them immediately. Use a contact feeder if you have one, saves bees drowing. I have home made Ashcorft feeders for my nucs so use those.

I have found it benificial if you are able to do so to give the swarm a frame of brood and you will find them very reluctant to leave this. Probably only acheiveable in your own or a large apairy.

Or old broodcomb..

Or some comb with honey
Or some drawn out comb.

(in descending order of preference..)

Anything is better than foundation..

If I have to give foundation to my own swarms - as I have this year - I feed after 24 hours.

Note: MY OWN swarms. Not unknown swarms - 3 days for them
