While weeding the garden today my trowel plunged into the mouth, diameter c.8cm, of a large cavity.
The depth was half way up my forearm. The cavity was empty and had smooth walls with no apparent tunnels leading off. It took two buckets of compost to fill it.
SWMBO reminded me that we had a wasps' nest in approx that position about five years ago. Seems the most likely explanation?
