greetings from not so sunny spain,
managed to do an inspection inbetween showers all looking well with a small amount of capped brood over four frames, I even managed to purloin a frame of capped honey,
Big shock when I opened the first hive to find the body of the monster in the photo,
in the second hive the same type of insect but this one was smothered in propolis, the measurement is in centimeters any ideas what they are???View attachment 10932

Dead "death scull moth", sounds weird as I wrote but that is that..

Or Death's-head Hawkmoth.. English isn't my language..

It is from what I saw in my beekeeping and other beeks. Not so rare you'll find it. I even saw once when it emerged from the hive at night ( still remember the play of moonlight/shadow - it looked like silver/black when fly off). I enjoyed in scene and sounds. Something like Phoenix rise seems when it get the shape leaving from swarm of bees at the entrance.

Dubrovnik is from me by one route over 500km, by other over 700km. Enjoy in holidays. For me it is unreasonable expensive, but that is another story..
