Really basic question: Would it work to carefully take a sealed queen cell from one hive and stick/graft it onto comb in a queenless hive, or would the workers attack or kill/breakdown the grafted cell?(I'm interested in non swarmy bee genes).

Depends. Mostly works OK. Only occasionally fails. You do need to pick your timing, particularly as a beginner. You could just gently swap the frames if you have only the one cell? KISS principle at work, maybe?
