I do not keep drones as a "sign". Neither do swarm preventing theory.
Every hive rear drones.
Only sigh is queen cells
- if not "swarm on tree" is another sign and
- third sigh "where are my bees" . Why hive does not flye?
Timing is one in swarming.
I abandoned carniola bees after 10 years because they swarmed when they ought to rear workers for main yield.
Italians swarm about one month later than Carniolans and then laying gap does not hurt main yield as much as early laying gap.
They all make at same time drones.
