Yesterday and today have been lovely weather here in NI and the bees have been busy bringing in bright yellow pollen by the bucket load. I had previously reduced the entrance on my poly nuc to keep mice out, and was surprised to see a pile of yellow pollen lying in front of the hive. On closer inspection the bees seemed to be having trouble climbing through the reduced entrance without knocking off their pollen.

I have moved the entrance disc back to a full entrance, however you can see the yellow on the reducer itself and the big pile of pollen lying in front of the hive.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Same thing on the Kielers in my garden. I reckon the pollen is more valuable to them for early brood than the risk of a mouse invasion, so I opened them up.

Looks like you need to screw the screw in a bit further then move the disc round so the hole is half covered.

I have a number of polys like these with the entrances half closed. Works a treat. :hurray:

me to half closed workss fine

Stick a nail through the 'vent' section to fix the disc precisely in position.

/ I think the section you have been using is more "qx" than "mouseguard" ...

Take it off altogether and put a little ledge there made of wood or something suitable. A little sand paper just to take the edge off the entrance hole will help sort it too.

Found a mouse in one of my empty poly nucs. :toetap05:

It had got in through the open hole, the disc wasn't fitted!!
